Lajintuntemuksella on my\u00f6s merkitys osana laajempaa luonnontuntemusta, sill\u00e4 esimerkiksi ekosysteemien rakenteen ja toiminnan ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4minen ilman lajintuntemusta olisi hankalaa. Lajintuntemustaitojen on todettu heikentyneen luonnontieteiden korkeakouluopiskelijoilla, mink\u00e4 lis\u00e4ksi lajintuntemuksen opiskelu korkeakouluissa on todettu yll\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4n vaikeaksi. Kaikki opiskelijat eiv\u00e4t koe lajintuntemustaitojen olevan edes t\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 tai kiinnostavia. Lajintuntemuksen opiskelua tulisikin kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 siten, ett\u00e4 opiskelijoiden motivaatio paranisi tieteellisesti, sis\u00e4ll\u00f6llisesti ja menetelm\u00e4llisesti laadukkaalla opetuksella. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia opiskelijoiden motivaatiota ja sen kehittymist\u00e4 kahden eri opetusmenetelm\u00e4n, itsen\u00e4isen verkko-opiskelun ja laboratorioharjoitusten vaikutuksesta Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston bio- ja ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6tieteiden laitoksen selk\u00e4rangattomien peruslajintuntemuksen kurssilla. Lis\u00e4ksi henkil\u00f6kohtaisen kiinnostuksen ja n\u00e4kemysten vaikutukset motivaatioon olivat my\u00f6s tutkimuksen kohteena. Tutkimus toteutettiin kyselytutkimuksena kolmessa eri vaiheessa kurssia. Tulosten mukaan l\u00e4hes kaikilla opiskelijoilla motivaatio osallistua kurssille oli hyv\u00e4. Opiskelijat kokivat itsen\u00e4isen verkko-opiskelun vaikuttavan opiskelumotivaatioon hyvin eri tavoin. Laboratorioharjoitusten puolestaan koettiin selke\u00e4sti lis\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4n opiskelumotivaatiota. Erityisesti vuorovaikutuksen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4ll\u00e4 koettiin olevan vaikutusta opiskelumotivaatioon, sill\u00e4 itsen\u00e4isen verkko-opetuksen aikaisen v\u00e4h\u00e4isen vuorovaikutuksen koettiin p\u00e4\u00e4s\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00f6isesti v\u00e4hent\u00e4v\u00e4n opiskelumotivaatiota ja laboratorioharjoitusten aikaisen vuorovaikutuksen selke\u00e4sti parantavan opiskelumotivaatiota. Verkko-opiskelun koettiin parantavan opiskelumahdollisuuksia, jolloin se opetusmenetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4 joustavuutta opiskeluun. Verkko-opiskelun ei my\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n koettu huonontavan oppimistuloksia, mutta mahdolliset ennakko-odotukset verkko-opiskelusta opetusmenetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 saattoivat vaikuttaa saatuun tulokseen. Opiskelijat olivat sen sijaan hyvin yksimielisi\u00e4 siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 laboratorioharjoitukset parantavat merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti oppimistuloksia. Opiskelijat my\u00f6s pitiv\u00e4t lajintuntemustaitoja tarpeellisina bio- ja ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6tieteilij\u00e4n asiantuntemuksessa ja suurin osa opiskelijoista piti kurssia my\u00f6s hy\u00f6dyllisen\u00e4 tulevaisuuden kannalta. Voidaankin todeta, ett\u00e4 jo opiskeluaikana teorian opettaminen my\u00f6s tulevaisuuden ty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4n n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta todenn\u00e4k\u00f6isesti lis\u00e4\u00e4 motivaatiota opiskella lajintuntemusta. Tulosten perusteella verkko-opiskelu lajintuntemuksen opetusmenetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 kaipaa viel\u00e4 kehitt\u00e4mist\u00e4, kun taas opiskelijoita aktivoivia opetusmenetelmi\u00e4 tulisi suosia lajintuntemuksen opetuksessa.", "language": "fi", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.abstract", "value": "Students\u2019 motivation and factors affecting it at a basic invertebrate identification course. \r\n\r\nSpecies identification skills are crucial for expertise in biology and environmental science. Species knowledge has also a role as part of wider knowledge of nature, for example understanding structures and functions of ecosystems would be much harder without the help of species knowledge. Unfortunately, species identification skills have weakened among science and biology students at universities, and students also feel that species identification is difficult to study. Some of the students don\u2019t necessarily find species identification skills interesting or even important. Studying species identification should be developed so that the students\u2019 motivation would increase as a result of scientifically, content-wise and methodologically qualified teaching. The aim of this study was to investigate motivation and its development at the basic course of invertebrate identification as affected by two different teaching methods: the independent web-based studies and the laboratory exercises as well as by individual interests and points of view at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science at the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4. The method used in this study was three inquiries carried out during the course. The study revealed that students\u2019 motivation at the beginning of the course was high. Students found independent web-based studies to affect motivation in many different ways. Instead, the students found that laboratory exercises clearly increased their motivation to study. Specifically, the amount of interaction was found to affect the motivation because during the independent web-based studies the low level of interaction reduced the motivation to study and during the laboratory exercises the high level of interaction between students and teachers increased the motivation. It became also shown that the students found the independent web-based studies improving their opportunities to study. In students\u2019 opinion web-based studying did not reduce the learning results. Instead, the students agreed that the laboratory exercises clearly improved their learning. In addition, the students found the identification skills to be necessary for expertise in biology and environmental science and most of the students also found the course useful for their future. Therefore, linking theory to working life might increase students\u2019 motivation to study species identification.
