Tutkivan oppimisen vaiheet muodostavat yhdessä tutkivan oppimisen polun, jossa tieto tarkentuu vaihe vaiheelta. Opiskelijoita voidaan haastaa tutkivassa oppimisessa eri tavalla riippuen ovatko tutkimuskysymykset, menetelmät tai ratkaisut annettu heille etukäteen. Tutkivaa oppimista voidaan hyödyntää erilaisten aihepiirien opetuksessa kaikenikäisten opiskelijoiden kanssa, mutta lukion biologian ensimmäisellä kurssilla käsiteltävä evoluutio on aiheena kuitenkin sellainen, jota ei usein opiskella kokeellisuuden avulla. Tässä tutkimuksessa kehitettiin lukion biologian evoluution opetukseen liittyvä yksinkertainen tutkiva oppimisprojekti. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää projektin vaikutuksia opiskelijoiden ymmärrykseen ja tarkastella miten oppimistulokset eroavat kun ratkaisuja tarkastellaan opettajajohtoisesti tai oppilaslähtöisesti. Lisäksi opiskelijoilta pyydettiin mielipiteitä projektin motivoivuudesta. Oppimisprojektissa opiskelijat tutkivat vihreistä ja ruskeista karkkiyksilöistä koostuvien populaatioiden evoluutiota vihreässä ja ruskeassa ympäristössä. Opiskelijat saalistivat populaatioista karkkiyksilöitä, jonka jälkeen jäljelle jääneet yksilöt lisääntyivät takaisin alkuperäiseen tiheyteen. Saalistusten ja lisääntymisten edetessä karkkipopulaatioiden värimuotojen lukusuhteet muuttuivat eri ympäristöissä ja populaatioissa havaittiin evoluutiota. Projektin lopuksi opiskelijat tarkastelivat tuloksiaan ja pohtivat miksi populaatiot olivat muuttuneet. Projektilla havaittiin olevan positiivinen vaikutus yksinkertaisten evoluutiomekanismien ymmärtämiseen, mutta monimutkaisempiin tapahtumiin, kuten lajiutumisen ymmärtämiseen projektilla ei ollut vaikutusta. Opettajajohtoisen ja oppilaslähtöisen tulosten tarkastelun mallien välillä ei havaittu eroja oppimistuloksissa. Opiskelijat suhtautuivat projektiin myönteisesti ja toivoivat vastaavia projekteja myös jatkossa. Teaching evolution in high school with inquiry-based learning. The new Finnish core curriculum requires teachers to use empirical teaching methods and experiments in their teaching. One way to achieve this is by means of inquiry-based learning. In inquiry-based learning knowledge is not absorbed straight from a handbook or teacher but instead is acquired by various scientific methods such as questions, hypotheses, explanations and experiments. Together the methods create a pathway where knowledge gets more accurate in each step. In inquiry-based learning students can be challenged with different levels of difficulty whether the questions, methods or results are offered in advance by the teacher. Even though inquiry-based learning can be used in various kinds of topics and with students of all ages, it is rarely used in the teaching of evolution in high school. In this study a simple inquiry-based learning project was developed for the purpose of teaching evolution. The aim of this study was to find out whether the project had an impact on students understading of evolutionary mechanisms and also whether teacher directed or student-centered learning affected understanding. Students were also asked to give feedback about the motivational factor of the project. The project developed in this research consisted of brown and green environments occupied by brown and green candy individuals. Together the individuals in an environment formed a population. Students took out individuals from the environment which represented predation and the remaining individuals reproduced offspring until the initial density was reached. As the predation and reproduction proceeded the ratios of different coloured individuals in the environment changed and the population evolved. At the end of the project students interpreted their results and discussed why the population changed. It was found out that the project had a positive effect on the understanding of simple evolutionary mechanisms but not on that of more complex mechamisms. Students’ understanding didn’t differ in teacher directed and student-centered learning. The students felt that the project motivated them to learn more and they wished for similar projects in the future.
