Autismi on yleens\u00e4 ennen kolmatta ik\u00e4vuotta havaittava kehityksellinen h\u00e4iri\u00f6, joka vaikuttaa merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti verbaaliseen ja nonverbaaliseen viestint\u00e4\u00e4n. Autismin peruspiirteiseen kuuluvat sosiaalisten taitojen puutteellisuus, heikentynyt viestint\u00e4kyky, kuuloherkkyys, impulsiivisuus, rajoittuneet mielenkiinnon kohteet ja toistuvat maneerit sek\u00e4 puheessa ett\u00e4 toiminnassa. \r\n\r\nTutkielman tarkoituksena on selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, mit\u00e4 k\u00e4sityksi\u00e4 autistisilla oppilailla, heid\u00e4n opettajillaan ja koulunk\u00e4yntiavustajillaan on englannin kielen oppimisesta ja opettamisesta Suomessa. Tutkimus kartoittaa autististen oppilaiden asenteita, vahvuuksia ja heikkouksia englannin kieless\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi selvitet\u00e4\u00e4n, mitk\u00e4 ovat eri oppimateriaalien, l\u00e4ksyjen ja arvioinnin sis\u00e4ll\u00f6t ja roolit englannin kielen opetuksessa autisteille. Tutkielmassa pohditaan my\u00f6s aikuisten roolia ja vuorovaikutusta oppimisprosesseissa sek\u00e4 englannin kielen opetuksen kehitt\u00e4mismahdollisuuksia. Aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin havainnoimalla ja haastattelemalla kahdeksaa autistista oppilasta, kolmea opettajaa ja yht\u00e4 koulunk\u00e4yntiavustajaa. Kyseiset puoliavoimet teemahaastattelut \u00e4\u00e4ninauhoitettiin ja analysoitiin l\u00e4hdekirjallisuuteen tukeutuen.\r\n\r\nTulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 haastatellut autistiset oppilaat suhtautuivat etup\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4 my\u00f6nteisesti englannin kielen opiskeluun. He pitiv\u00e4t erityisesti suullisesta viestinn\u00e4st\u00e4 sek\u00e4 auditiivisista ja visuaalisista materiaaleista. Lis\u00e4ksi he arvostivat opettajaa sek\u00e4 tiedonantajana ett\u00e4 kurinpit\u00e4j\u00e4n\u00e4. Kokeet olivat heid\u00e4n selke\u00e4 inhokkinsa. Haastatellut opettajat taas pitiv\u00e4t kuullunymm\u00e4rt\u00e4mist\u00e4 ja kirjallisia t\u00f6it\u00e4 kompastuskivin\u00e4. Useat tutkimukseen osallistujat toivoivat jatkossa englannin kielen opetuksessa k\u00e4ytett\u00e4v\u00e4n lis\u00e4\u00e4 autenttista ja visuaalista materiaalia, suullisia teht\u00e4vi\u00e4 sek\u00e4 konkreettisuutta.
