T\u00e4m\u00e4n lis\u00e4ksi tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 automatisoidun ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6monitoroinnin nykytilaa ja siihen kytkeytyvi\u00e4 kehityssuuntauksia. Tutkimuksessa perehdyt\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s Kaitforsin patoalueelle asennetun pilottij\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4n IEEE 802.15.4 -standardiin perustuvaan langattoman sensoriverkon toimintaan ja siihen kytkeytyneiden sensorinoodien virrankulutukseen. \r\n \r\nTutkimus toteutettiin tapaustutkimuksena, jossa hy\u00f6dynnettiin sek\u00e4 laadullisia ett\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llisi\u00e4 tutkimusmenetelmi\u00e4. Tutkimustulosten mukaan automatisoidun ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6monitoroinnin hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4misen kokonaisaste on olemassa oleviin monitorointitarpeisiin suhteutettuna hyvin v\u00e4h\u00e4inen. Tutkimus osoittaa my\u00f6s, ett\u00e4 nykyist\u00e4 laajempaan automatisoituun ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6monitorointiin on havaittavissa selkeit\u00e4 siirtym\u00e4suunnitelmia. T\u00e4m\u00e4n my\u00f6t\u00e4 automatisoitu monitorointi tulee korvaamaan viel\u00e4 nykyisin seurantaty\u00f6ss\u00e4 hyvin laajamittaisesti tarvittavan manuaalisen ty\u00f6n osuutta. Tutkimus osoittaa my\u00f6s, ett\u00e4 WSN-ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6monitoroinnissa k\u00e4ytett\u00e4v\u00e4t sensoriteknologiat tulee energiatehokkuuden ohella arvioida my\u00f6s luotettavuuden ja pitk\u00e4ik\u00e4isyyden n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Another aim of this study is to clarify the present adaptation state of automated environmental monitoring in general and its development trends. In addition, this thesis also examines the operation of the pilot system installed in the Kaitfors reservoir utilizing wireless sensor network based on IEEE 802.15.4 -standard and electric power usage of the connected sensor nodes.\r\n \r\nResearch has been conducted as a case study and both qualitative and quantitative research methods have been used. Research shows, that the adaptation level of automated environmental monitoring is low, when put in the context of actual needs for monitoring information as a whole. Furthermore, the research clarifies, that current policies will lead to higher adaptation levels of automated environmental systems in the near future.\r\nThis in turn will lead to lower needs for manual labor still needed in monitoring efforts today. Research also indicates, that it is paramount to assess sensor technologies applicable to WSN environmental monitoring from the point of reliability and longevity in addition to energy efficiency.
