Tutkimuksessa perehdytään myös Kaitforsin patoalueelle asennetun pilottijärjestelmän IEEE 802.15.4 -standardiin perustuvaan langattoman sensoriverkon toimintaan ja siihen kytkeytyneiden sensorinoodien virrankulutukseen. Tutkimus toteutettiin tapaustutkimuksena, jossa hyödynnettiin sekä laadullisia että määrällisiä tutkimusmenetelmiä. Tutkimustulosten mukaan automatisoidun ympäristömonitoroinnin hyödyntämisen kokonaisaste on olemassa oleviin monitorointitarpeisiin suhteutettuna hyvin vähäinen. Tutkimus osoittaa myös, että nykyistä laajempaan automatisoituun ympäristömonitorointiin on havaittavissa selkeitä siirtymäsuunnitelmia. Tämän myötä automatisoitu monitorointi tulee korvaamaan vielä nykyisin seurantatyössä hyvin laajamittaisesti tarvittavan manuaalisen työn osuutta. Tutkimus osoittaa myös, että WSN-ympäristömonitoroinnissa käytettävät sensoriteknologiat tulee energiatehokkuuden ohella arvioida myös luotettavuuden ja pitkäikäisyyden näkökulmasta. Lisäksi tutkimus osoittaa pilottijärjestelmän kaltaisten WSN-sovellusten verkko- ja järjestelmäratkaisujen soveltuvan hyvin pitkäaikaiseen autonomiseen pohjavesiseurantaan. The purpose of this master's thesis was to examine -- from the perspective of the groundwater level monitoring pilot system that has been developed in Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius and installed at Kaitfors reservoir -- what kind of methods can be used in automated water level and water quality monitoring with existing IoT- and WSN-technologies. Another aim of this study is to clarify the present adaptation state of automated environmental monitoring in general and its development trends. In addition, this thesis also examines the operation of the pilot system installed in the Kaitfors reservoir utilizing wireless sensor network based on IEEE 802.15.4 -standard and electric power usage of the connected sensor nodes. Research has been conducted as a case study and both qualitative and quantitative research methods have been used. Research shows, that the adaptation level of automated environmental monitoring is low, when put in the context of actual needs for monitoring information as a whole. Furthermore, the research clarifies, that current policies will lead to higher adaptation levels of automated environmental systems in the near future. This in turn will lead to lower needs for manual labor still needed in monitoring efforts today. Research also indicates, that it is paramount to assess sensor technologies applicable to WSN environmental monitoring from the point of reliability and longevity in addition to energy efficiency. Research shows that WSN-solutions such as the developed pilot system are well suited for long-term autonomous groundwater level monitoring.
