Tämän kandidaatintutkielman tarkoitus on selvittää, miksi ihmiset pelaavat digitaalisia liikuntapelejä ja mikä saa heidät jatkamaan pelaamista. Aluksi esitellään ja määritellään liikkuminen ja digitaaliset liikuntapelit käsitteinä, sekä tarkastellaan kahta eri alustaa, joilla digitaalisia liikuntapelejä voi pelata. Tämän jälkeen käsitellään syitä ja motivaatiota pelata digitaalisia liikuntapelejä, eli miksi ihmiset pelaavat kyseisiä pelejä. Samassa kappaleessa käsitellään motivaation ylläpitämistä, eli kuinka liikkumista voidaan ylläpitää digitaalisten liikuntapelien avulla. Kuten tulokset ehdottavat, ihmiset pelaavat digitaalisia liikuntapelejä siksi, että he nauttivat siitä, harvemmin pelkästään liikkuakseen lisää. Lisäksi tuloksista voidaan todeta, että liikkumisen määrä lisääntyy ensimmäisten kahden peliviikon aikana, jonka jälkeen liikkuminen vähenee tasaisesti samalle tasolle, jolla se oli ennen pelaamisen aloittamista. Tutkielman lopussa ovat yhteenveto, johtopäätelmät sekä ehdotuksia jatkotutkimuksille. Suurin osa tässä tutkielmassa käytetyistä lähteistä keskittyy Pokémon GO -peliin sen viimeaikaisen ja suuren suosion takia. Video games have been perceived as sedentary for most of their existence. As games make people move more than before, studying this phenomenon is becoming more important and more interesting than before. Exergames combine digital games and non-sedentary physical activity. The purpose of this study is to find out why people play exergames and what keeps people playing exergames. First the focus is on exergaming: defining physical activity and exergaming, and taking a closer look at two different platforms for exergaming. After that, the reasons and motivation behind exergames, as in why people play them is discussed. The sustainability of the motivation to play exergames, in other words keeping up the level of physical activity with the help of exergames, is also discussed in this chapter. As the results suggest, people play exergames for fun, rarely purely for exercise. The results also show that the level of exertion rises during the first two weeks of playing but starts then to decrease towards the starting level, reaching it by the end of week six. At the end, there is a summary of the paper along with conclusions, and suggestions for further studies on the topic.
