In recent years, a good amount of work has been done studying and automating the virtual camera control in three dimensional virtual environments and game cinematography. However, research of two dimensional virtual camera controls is lacking. The study of both virtual camera and virtual cinematography has many applications including modelling software, video games, electronic sports, and virtual simulations. The study of 2D virtual cameras benefits small scale game development.\r\nIn this MSc thesis, the design principles of 2D virtual camera control are formally analyzed in three action video games that have been originally published for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System videogame console. A simple customizable 2D virtual camera control is then proposed.
