Quine k\u00e4sittelee totuuden luonnetta lukuisissa teoksissaan systemaattisesti l\u00e4pi pitk\u00e4n uransa ajan. T\u00e4st\u00e4 huolimatta h\u00e4nen totuusk\u00e4sityst\u00e4\u00e4n ei ole tutkittu muutamia yksitt\u00e4isi\u00e4 artikkeleita lukuun ottamatta. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkielman tavoitteena on t\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4t\u00e4 olemassa olevaa aukkoa suhteellisen laajassa Quinen filosofista j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4\u00e4 k\u00e4sittelev\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuskent\u00e4ss\u00e4.\r\n\r\nArgumentoin sen puolesta, kuinka Quinen filosofisen j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4n osaksi kuuluu h\u00e4nen filosofisiin sitoumuksiinsa perustuva koherentti totuusk\u00e4sitys. Pyrin osoittamaan, kuinka t\u00e4m\u00e4 totuusk\u00e4sitys koostuu kahdesta aspektista, joista ensimm\u00e4inen koskee totuuspredikaatin funktionaalista luonnetta kielellisen\u00e4 instrumenttina ja toinen tieteellisiin teorioihin liittyv\u00e4\u00e4 totuutta er\u00e4\u00e4nlaisena tutkimuksellisena p\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n\u00e4. Esit\u00e4n tulkinnan, jonka mukaan n\u00e4m\u00e4 kaksi aspektia liittyv\u00e4t toisiinsa muodostaen Quinen yhten\u00e4isen totuusk\u00e4sityksen. T\u00e4m\u00e4 totuusk\u00e4sitys perustuu edelleen Alfred Tarskin (1944) semanttiseen totuusk\u00e4sitykseen ja Quinen omaan naturalistiseen filosofiaan.\r\n\r\nTutkielma esitt\u00e4\u00e4 n\u00e4kemyksen jonka mukaan Quinen naturalistinen filosofia, joka perustuu h\u00e4nen sitoumuksiinsa koskien jyrkk\u00e4\u00e4n empirismi\u00e4 ja skientismi\u00e4, osoittautuu h\u00e4nen filosofisen j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4ns\u00e4 keskeisimm\u00e4ksi osa-alueeksi. Quinen naturalistiseen ajatteluun sis\u00e4ltyv\u00e4t filosofiset sitoumukset osoittautuvat m\u00e4\u00e4ritt\u00e4viksi tekij\u00f6iksi koskien h\u00e4nen kielifilosofisia n\u00e4kemyksi\u00e4\u00e4n erityisesti behavioristisen kielik\u00e4sityksen ja empiristisen merkitysteorian osalta. Kaikki edell\u00e4 mainitut sitoumukset vaikuttavat Quinen totuusk\u00e4sityksen luonteeseen.\r\n\r\nTutkielma esitt\u00e4\u00e4 aikaisemmin esitetyist\u00e4 tulkinnoista poikkeavan n\u00e4kemyksen Quinen filosofiseen j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4\u00e4n sis\u00e4ltyv\u00e4n totuusk\u00e4sityksen luonteesta. Tutkielman tulosten perusteella voidaan argumentoida sellaisia n\u00e4kemyksi\u00e4 vastaan, jotka esitt\u00e4v\u00e4t Quinen sitoutuvan useampaan kuin yhteen totuusk\u00e4sitykseen. Quine discusses the nature of truth in many of his works systematically throughout his career. Regardless of this, Quine\u2019s truth conception has not been studied apart from few individual articles. This study attempts to offer a contribution to this lack of research concerning Quine\u2019s truth conception in the reasonably broad field of research that concerns his philosophical system.\r\n\r\nI argue that Quine\u2019s philosophical system includes a coherent truth conception that is based on his philosophical commitments. I will present support for my claim of how Quine's truth conception consists of two aspects, one relating to the functional nature of the truth predicate and the other to the immanent nature of truth to a scientific theory. I present an interpretation of how these two aspects can be understood as connecting to one another and thus forming a single and coherent truth conception. This conception is further based on Alfred Tarski\u2019s (1944) semantic conception of truth and Quine\u2019s own naturalistic philosophy.\r\n\r\nThis study presents a view of Quine\u2019s philosophical system that sees his naturalistic thought, which includes his commitments to strict empiricism and scientism, as the most central aspect of his overall philosophical system. The philosophical commitments of Quine\u2019s naturalistic philosophy prove to be determining factors in relation to his philosophy of language; especially Quine\u2019s commitments to linguistic behaviorism and empirical notion of meaning are influenced by the commitments of his naturalistic philosophy. All of these commitments further affect the nature of Quine\u2019s truth conception.\r\n\r\nThis study presents a differing interpretation of Quine's truth conception to what some contemporary researchers have claimed. The results of this study can be utilized in arguing against those types of interpretations that see Quine's philosophical system as including multiple truth conceptions. Additionally, the results of this study can be used as an instrument in problematizing those types of interpretations that label Quine as a supporter of a deflationary theory of truth.
