Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin avulla tulkitsemalla suomalaisten johtajien henkil\u00f6kuvia tai henkil\u00f6kuvien tyyppisi\u00e4 artikkeleita, joissa haastateltava kertoo johtamisty\u00f6st\u00e4\u00e4n. Aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin suomalaisista talouslehdist\u00e4, p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa Talousel\u00e4m\u00e4-lehdest\u00e4, vuosilta 1995\u20132015. Teoreettisena viitekehyksess\u00e4 tulkinnassa k\u00e4ytettiin Mintzbergin rooliteoreettista mallia. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin, ett\u00e4 ihmissuhderooleissa johtajat hankkivat ja paransivat suhdeverkostojaan, edustivat yrityst\u00e4 ulosp\u00e4in ja motivoivat henkil\u00f6st\u00f6\u00e4\u00e4n. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 tavoiteltiin ulkoisia synergiaetuja yritysten v\u00e4lisest\u00e4 yhteisty\u00f6st\u00e4 ja henkil\u00f6st\u00f6n hyv\u00e4\u00e4 ilmapiiri\u00e4 ja sit\u00e4 kautta sitoutumista. Tiedonk\u00e4sittelyrooleissa johtajat hankkivat tietoa ep\u00e4virallisten kanavien kautta, tiedottivat yrityksen asioista mahdollisimman avoimesti ja rakensivat luottamusta. Tavoitteena oli avoimuus ja luottamuksen vahvistaminen ja sit\u00e4 kautta yrityksen maineen parantaminen. P\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6ksentekorooleissa johdettiin asioita ja tehtiin p\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6ksi\u00e4, ratkaistiin sis\u00e4isi\u00e4 henkil\u00f6st\u00f6ongelmia ja neuvoteltiin ulkopuolisten kumppanien kanssa. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 johtamisty\u00f6ll\u00e4 pyrittiin rakentamaan pitk\u00e4lle tulevaisuuteen t\u00e4ht\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4 strategia, toimivat prosessit ja yrityksen tuloksellisuus. Tutkimuksessa ilmeni niin ik\u00e4\u00e4n, ett\u00e4 aineistossa esiintyvien suomalaisten johtajien puheessa n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyiv\u00e4t kaikki johtamisen paradigmat, suurmiesteoriasta uusimpiin innovaatioparadigmoihin.
