Aquaponic-viljelyll\u00e4 on siis potentiaalia lis\u00e4t\u00e4 ruoantuotannon tehokkuutta, mutta sen laajamittaista k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6nottoa hidastavat viljelyn monimutkaisuus sek\u00e4 korkeat aloituskustannukset. Kaupallinen tehotuotanto on toistaiseksi ollut vaatimatonta, n\u00e4in ollen aquaponicsin taloudellisesta tuottavuudesta on v\u00e4h\u00e4isesti tutkimustuloksia. Tutkimuksemme tarkoitus oli tuottaa lis\u00e4\u00e4 tietoa kasvien kasvusta ja laadusta aquaponic-systeemiss\u00e4 ja selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, onko veden alkuper\u00e4ll\u00e4 ja lannoituksella vaikutusta niihin. Mittasimme eri ravintokasvien kasvua aquaponic- ja hydroponic-systeemeiss\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en vertailukriteerein\u00e4 sek\u00e4 biologisesti t\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 tutkimusmuuttujia ett\u00e4 kaupalliseen hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4miseen vaikuttavia tekij\u00f6it\u00e4: kasvien tuoremassaa, juurten pituutta ja tuoremassaa, lehtipinta-alaa sek\u00e4 kasvien v\u00e4ri\u00e4, hajua ja makua. Koeasetelmamme k\u00e4sitti 12 kasvatusallasta, joissa kasvatimme kahta ker\u00e4salaatin (Lactuca sativa var. capitata) tyyppi\u00e4 (j\u00e4\u00e4vuorisalaatti ja bataviasalaatti) sek\u00e4 punalehtist\u00e4 basilikaa (Ocimum basilicum) kuuden viikon ajan seuraamalla niit\u00e4 viikoittain. K\u00e4ytimme kasvatusliuoksen osalta kahta k\u00e4sittely\u00e4: veden alkuper\u00e4 (tasot: porakaivo/aquaponic-systeemi) ja lannoitus (tasot: lannoitettu/lannoittamaton). Aikaisempiin tutkimuksiin perustuen odotimme, ett\u00e4 kasvilannoitetta saaneet kasvit kasvaisivat suuremmiksi kuin lannoittamatonta vett\u00e4 saaneet. Tuloksemme koko kasvin tuoremassan, juurten tuoremassan, juurten pituuden ja lehtipinta-alan osalta tukivat t\u00e4t\u00e4 hypoteesia. Hypoteesimme siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 aquaponic-vesi ja lannoitus yhdess\u00e4 johtaisivat joko yht\u00e4 hyv\u00e4\u00e4n tai parempaan kasvien kasvuun kuin mihin lannoite tai aquaponic-vesi johtaisivat yksin\u00e4\u00e4n, sai tukea koko kasvin ja juurten tuoremassan sek\u00e4 lehtipinta-alan osalta. Basilikan tuoremassaan tai pinta-alaan k\u00e4sittelyll\u00e4 ei ollut merkitsev\u00e4\u00e4 vaikutusta, bataviasalaatti puolestaan kasvoi muita lajeja suuremmaksi useamman eri tutkimusmuuttujan osalta. Keskeinen tulos viittaa siihen, ettei mink\u00e4\u00e4n kasvin kasvua tai laatua ilment\u00e4v\u00e4n tutkimusmuuttujan eik\u00e4 mink\u00e4\u00e4n kasvilajin kohdalla ole havaittavaa eroa hydroponic- ja aquaponic-viljelyn, eli lannoitetun porakaivoveden ja lannoittamattoman aquaponic-veden v\u00e4lill\u00e4.", "language": "fi", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.abstract", "value": "Combined aquaculture and cultivation of plants in water, referred to as aquaponics, seems promising in relieving the global problems in food production, because the amount of nutrients needed for hydroculture is lower as in aquaponics the nutrients from fish wastes are used to produce plant crops. Therefore, aquaponics has the potential to maximize food production with fewer resources, but the complexity and high capital costs of aquaponic systems have been hindering their use on a larger scale. Due to moderate commercial production there isn\u2019t much scientific literature on profitability of aquaponics. The aim of our study was to yield more science-based information on plant growth and quality in an aquaponic system, and to find out whether the source and fertilization of water affect them. We measured the growth of different edible plants in aquaponic and hydroponic systems, comparing both biologically relevant variables as well as variables related to capitalizing the crops: the fresh mass of the plants, the length and fresh mass of the roots, leaf area and the color, smell and taste of the plants. Our experimental setup included 12 tanks in which we cultivated and monitored two types (iceberg and Batavian) of lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. capitata) and red basil (Ocimum basilicum) for six weeks. We used two solution treatments in our study: the source of the water (two classes: bore well/aquaponics) and fertilization (added fertilizer/no fertilizer). Based on previous research we expected that the plants that received fertilizer would grow bigger than the plants that did not. Our results on the fresh mass of the whole plant, the fresh mass of the roots, the length of the roots and the leaf area supported this hypothesis. We also hypothesized that together the fertilizer and the water from aquaponic system would result in as good or even better growth than either one of them on their own. This hypothesis was supported by the results on the fresh mass of the whole plant, the fresh mass of the roots and the leaf area. Treatment did not have statistically significant effect on fresh mass or leaf area of basil, whereas comparing various variables Batavian lettuce grew larger than the other species.
