Integration av invandrare i idrottsundervisningen. – En kvalitativ studie om idrottslärares upplevelser. Jyväskylä universitet. Pro gradu -avhandling. Sidantal: 64.

Nyckelord: Idrottsundervisning, invandrare, integration, mångkulturell undervisning, religion
dc.description.abstract
Sandvik, J. 2016. Integration of immigrants into physical education – A qualitative study of PE-teachers’ experiences. University of Jyväskylä. Master’s Thesis. Pages: 64.

The purpose of this study was to investigate Finland Swedish PE-teachers’ experiences of multicultural teaching groups. The aim was furthermore to find out the teachers’ eventual solutions to complicated situations, which can occur when teaching sports to pupils with varying cultural backgrounds. Finland is getting more multicultural every day, which means that physical education today requires more cultural competence and ability to integrate than a few years ago.

This qualitative study had a phenomenological hermeneutical approach. An internet inquiry and a semistructured interview were used for collecting data during the winter and spring of 2016. Seven PE-teachers (four women and three men) replied to the internet inquiry and two PE-teachers (one woman and one man) took part in the interviews. The interviews were transcribed and all data was then analyzed by using qualitative content analysis.

The PE-teachers in this study had in general positive experiences of teaching multicultural groups. They declared that religious and cultural differences can cause challenges in some sports, but that it usually is pretty easy to solve these situations if all parts are willing to cooperate. Sport is a good discipline for integration due to the universal language of physical activity. The PE-teachers in this study stated that girls and boys with an immigrant or refugee background act differently during PE-lessons; especially Muslim girls have a tendency to withdraw and not take place, while Muslim boys are much more active. Muslim girls are, unlike boys, limited by religious rules even in school. The teachers also stated that the more exotic and divergent background a pupil has, the longer time does it take to get him/her integrated. Physical, psychological and social factors affect refugee and immigrant pupils’ attitude towards physical education. Lack of experience in some sports can play a negative role, but in general do the pupils seem to be polite, flexible, empathic and motivated to learn typically Finnish sports. According to the PE-teachers in this study do the most challenging situations emerge when refugees or immigrants from exotic countries are about to be integrated into swimming and winter sports. These situations have been solved by taking in school assistants for extra help or by organizing remedial education for these pupils outside the ordinary schedule. Muslim girls’ swimming education has though mostly dropped through.

Multicultural teaching groups are one of the Finnish school’s biggest and most actual challenges. Integration requires cultural and pedagogic competence, but especially patience, understanding and a will to communicate. The biggest challenge is not in the practical teaching but in the attitude to cooperation. It is possible to find solutions if all parts (teacher, pupil and parents) are positively adjusted towards each other. Refugee and immigrant pupils can ideally be an asset and not a burden in physical education.

Keywords: Physical education, immigrant, integration, multicultural teaching, religion
dc.description.provenance
Submitted using Plone Publishing form by Josefin Sandvik (jomasosa) on 2017-01-05 08:16:59.054181.
