Interventio alkoi keskimäärin 6 v ja 7 kk:n iässä. Interventioryhmäläiset pelasivat 1.lk:n loppupuoliskolla 4 kuukauden jakson aikana aktiivisesti kunnes oppivat lukemaan, tai vähintään 360 minuuttia. Suunniteltu peliaika oli koulusta riippuen kahdesta neljään pelipäivää viikossa, sisältäen jokaisessa ryhmässä vähintään kaksi perättäistä pelipäivää. Kukin pelipäivä sisälsi 15-20 min jaksoissa pelattuna 30-45 minuuttia harjoittelua. Interventiolla oli merkitsevä (p<.05) vaikutus kirjain-äännevastaavuuksien, fonologisen tietoisuuden ja tekstinlukutaidon kehittymiseen, mutta ei pseudosanan tunnistamisen kehittymiseen. Interventio- ja kontrolliryhmän väliset vertailut osoittivat, että interventio paransi erityisesti hyvin matalan lähtötason omaavien kirjain-äännevastaavuuksien oppimista verrattuna pelkkään kouluopetukseen osallistuneisiin. GraphoGameaTM voidaan suositella opetuksen tueksi lukutaidon ja sen perusteiden oppimiseen lukutaidottomille, heikot lukivalmiudet omaaville ensimmäisen luokan oppilaille Chilen vähäosaisiin julkisiin kouluihin. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of a phonics based digital literacy game (GraphoGameTM) in supporting reading skills of Chilean first grade students in Spanish orthography in the disadvantaged public schools in the region of Araucanía. At the beginning of the first grade, the participants were illiterate and had a poor letter identification level. The participants (n=122), from five schools, were averagely 6 years and 4 months old at the beginning of the study. They were randomized within each class to control (n=64) and intervention groups (n=58). At the beginning of the intervention, the students were aged 6 years and 7 months on average. The four months long intervention was realized at the end of the school year, during which the students played either until they learned to read or until they reached the target of 360 minutes active playing time. Depending on the school, the playing schedule included two to four days of practice each week, including two consecutive days of practice. Each session lasted for 30-45 minutes, which was played in series divided in 15-20 minutes. Due to the results, the intervention had an effect on learning letter-sound correspondences, phonological awareness and the development of the reading ability, but not on pseudo word identification task. The comparisons of intervention and control group indicate that intervention improved the learning of letter-sound correspondences especially on the students who had the lowest starting level, when compared to control group. According to the study, the computer based literacy game GraphoGameTM, can be used as a support for teaching reading skills in Spanish orthography for first grade students with poor pre-reading skills in unprivileged public schools in Chile.
