Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan jo toteutettuja tutkimuksia edell\u00e4 mainitulla aikav\u00e4lill\u00e4. Tutkimusten laadun ja m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n perusteella arvioidaan tietohallinnon roolia kyseisen\u00e4 ajankohtana. Tutkielma suoritetaan kirjallisuuskatsauksena, joten se painottuu vahvasti olemassa olevaan l\u00e4hdemateriaaliin. Tarkoituksena on luoda yleisk\u00e4sitys olemassa olevien tutkimusten perusteella siit\u00e4, kuinka tietohallinnon rooli on vuosien saatossa muuttunut. Tutkimuksen yksi painoalue on siis l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 suhteellisen selkeit\u00e4 murrosvaiheita tietohallinnon roolissa. Hypoteesi on se, ett\u00e4 tiedon m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n kasvaessa my\u00f6s tietohallinnon roolin merkitys on kasvanut koko ajan. Tietohallinnon roolin muuttuessa ja tiedon m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n kasvaessa organisaatioille on yh\u00e4 t\u00e4rke\u00e4mp\u00e4\u00e4 kyet\u00e4 j\u00e4rkev\u00e4\u00e4n tietohallinnon j\u00e4rjest\u00e4miseen. Tieto on yrityksille t\u00e4rke\u00e4 resurssi ja sen tehokas hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4minen vaatii tuekseen hyvin j\u00e4rjestetyn tietohallinnon. Tietohallinto itse tarvitsee tuekseen hyv\u00e4n IT-infrastruktuurin. Tietohallinnon tulee taas tukea osaltaan yrityksen liiketoiminnan strategioita, eli olla strategisesti yhteensovitettu. T\u00e4m\u00e4 kirjallisuuskatsaus pyrkii tiivist\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n tietohallinnon tutkimuksiin perustuvan roolin historian nelj\u00e4 viimeisint\u00e4 vuosikymment\u00e4 helposti ymm\u00e4rrett\u00e4v\u00e4ksi kokonaisuudeksi. T\u00e4llainen historiallisten ratkaisujen ja tilanteiden tuntemus auttaa nykyp\u00e4iv\u00e4n organisaatioita ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n tietohallinnon historiaa ja sit\u00e4, kuinka monenlaisten eri vaiheiden kautta se on p\u00e4\u00e4tynyt nykyiseen tilaansa. Tarkasteltavana on my\u00f6s se, kuinka hyvin tutkimusten m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 ja laatu kuvastaa todellista tilannetta aihealueen t\u00e4rkeydest\u00e4. Tulee muistaa, ett\u00e4 asiaa tarkastellaan tutkimuksen kannalta. Se ei siis suoraan kuvaa merkityst\u00e4, vaan pikemminkin tutkimuksen kiinnostusta. Keskeisimp\u00e4n\u00e4 tuloksena todetaan, ett\u00e4 tutkimusten perusteella tietohallinnon rooli on noin 1980-luvun puoliv\u00e4list\u00e4 alkaen korostunut aina 1990-luvun loppuun saakka. T\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen tutkimusten m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 v\u00e4heni ja sen perusteella my\u00f6s tietohallinnon roolin t\u00e4rkeys hiipui. T\u00e4t\u00e4 on kuitenkaan vaikea perustella tosiel\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4, sill\u00e4 tiedon lis\u00e4\u00e4ntyminen oletettavasti korostaa tietohallinnon merkityst\u00e4. T\u00e4h\u00e4n saadaan tukea my\u00f6s tarkastelluista tutkimuksista. This study examines researches of that time period. Amount and quality of research is used when estimating the importance of the role of information management during that time period. This study is performed as a literature review so it takes advantage of already existing source material. The goal is to construct a picture, based on existing literature, of how the role of information management has changed throughout the years. One emphasis of this study is therefore in finding relatively clear turning points in the role of information management. Hypothesis is that as the amount of information has grown it also reflects in a more important role for information management. As the role of information management changes and amount of information is on the rise, it is important for organizations to be able to deploy sensible use of information management. Information is an important resource for organizations and utilizing it requires well planned information management. Information management itself requires a good IT-infrastructure. It is also important for information management to be strategically aligned with business strategies of organizations. This literature review aims to summarize the last four decades of the role of information management into an easily understandable whole. Understanding of historical choices and situations helps organizations to also understand the history of information management and how it has evolved to get to its current state. Study also tries to approximate that is it possible to straightly correlate the importance of a subject to the amount and quality of re-search that is being made. It should be kept in mind that this thesis considers only the research viewpoint and thus gives information only about interest of research in this topic. In this study it was found that based on the amount and quality of researches, the importance of information management and its role has been on the rise since mid-80s until late 90s. After this time period the amount of research dropped and according to that also the importance of information management has been decreasing. This is however difficult to justify considering how much information is available and used today. It should also reflect on the role of information management. Studies examined also support this.
