The study also aimed to examine if certain diagnoses are more common among the
highly neurotic persons compared to the less neurotic group. In this study personality was
examined from trait perspective according to the common Five Factor Theory. According to
the Five Factor Theory, the personality of an individual can be described via five partially innate
and stabile traits. These traits define how a person perceives and acts in different situations.
From the five traits, the trait of neuroticism was under interest in this study. People high in
neuroticism have a higher tendency to experience negative effects and be anxious, nervous and
feel hopeless.
This study used the data from the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social
Development, in particular the information collected in 2009. A health interview and NEO
personality inventory was used. In the health examination, the participants of the study reported
their diagnoses and use of different medicines. Neuroticism was assessed using the NEO
personality inventory. Both the health and neuroticism information was available from 209
study participants. Using the Pearson correlation test, the correlation between neuroticism and
the use of medication and the correlation between neuroticism and the number of diagnoses
were examined. The link of high neuroticism and different diagnoses was examined by
calculating odds ratios. In the calculation the most neurotic quartile of the participants was
compared to the rest of the participants. The significance of the odds ratios was tested with a
Chi-square test.
Both the correlation between the use of medication and neuroticism and the correlation between
the diagnoses and neuroticism was moderate in size and significant. When mental health
problems and medication used for their treatment were removed from the analyses, the
correlation between diagnoses and neuroticism remained significant but became week. The
correlation between medication use and neuroticism was no longersignificant. Oddsratios were
not significantly different between the most neurotic and others when somatic diagnoses were
examined. However, the odds ratio for having any mental health problem was over four times
higher for the most neurotic quartile. Anxiety disorder was over five times more common, and
depression almost eight times more common among the most neurotic compared to the other
participants.
The main result of the study is that neurotic people have considerably higher odds for mental
health problems than less neurotic ones. Especially depression and anxiety disorders are
remarkably common among the most neurotic. Considering that mental health problems are
among the diseases that cause most severe damage for the quality of life, this high risk group
needs to be taken into special consideration.
dc.description.provenance
Submitted using Plone Publishing form by Matti Hetemäki (mahahete) on 2016-08-25 16:08:16.581645.
