Sovellettu rentoutus on empiirisesti tutkittu ja validoitu, n\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n perustuva itsehallinta- eli coping-menetelm\u00e4. Aikaisemmissa tutkimuksissa ei ole k\u00e4ytetty sykev\u00e4livaihtelun mittaamista sovelletun rentoutuksen arvioinnissa. T\u00e4m\u00e4n pro gradu-tutkielman tarkoitus oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, mink\u00e4laisia muutoksia sovelletun rentoutuksen interventiolla on koehenkil\u00f6iden stressiin ja palautumiseen sykev\u00e4livaihtelua mittaamalla sek\u00e4 miten koehenkil\u00f6t kokevat menetelm\u00e4n harjoittelun ja mink\u00e4laisia vaikutuksia he kuvaavat menetelm\u00e4ll\u00e4 olevan el\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4ns\u00e4.\n\nTutkimuksen koehenkil\u00f6in\u00e4 oli 12 ty\u00f6ss\u00e4k\u00e4yv\u00e4\u00e4 naista (n = 9) ja miest\u00e4 (n = 3) (keski-ik\u00e4 = 42 \u00b111), jotka osallistuivat kymmenen viikon sovelletun rentoutuksen interventioon maalis-toukokuussa 2014. Interventio koostui kerran viikossa toteutettavasta ohjatusta harjoituksesta ryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4 sek\u00e4 omatoimisesta p\u00e4ivitt\u00e4isest\u00e4 harjoittelusta, josta tutkittavia pyydettiin pit\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n harjoitusp\u00e4iv\u00e4kirjaa. Tutkimus sis\u00e4lsi kolme sykev\u00e4livaihtelumittausta: alkumittaus ennen interventiota, loppumittaus intervention p\u00e4\u00e4tytty\u00e4 sek\u00e4 3 kuukauden seurantamittaus. Tutkimuksessa k\u00e4ytettiin Firstbeat-hyvinvointianalyysia, jossa mittaus tapahtui kolmen vuorokauden aikana koehenkil\u00f6iden omissa toimintaymp\u00e4rist\u00f6iss\u00e4. Tutkittavat vastasivat ennen jokaista mittausta terveystottumuksia koskevaan kyselyyn. Aineisto sykev\u00e4livaihtelusta analysoitiin toistomittausten varianssianalyysill\u00e4 ja kyselyt Friedmanin testill\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi tarkasteltiin koehenkil\u00f6iden sovelletun rentoutuksen menetelm\u00e4lle antamia merkityksi\u00e4 ja kokemuksia harjoittelusta analysoimalla heid\u00e4n harjoittelup\u00e4iv\u00e4kirjojaan ja intervention lopuksi ker\u00e4tty\u00e4 kirjallista palautetta sis\u00e4ll\u00f6n erittelyn keinoin.\n\nKoehenkil\u00f6iden stressin osuus vuorokaudessa lis\u00e4\u00e4ntyi alku- ja seurantamittausten v\u00e4lill\u00e4 50 prosentista 53 prosenttiin, mutta samalla my\u00f6s palautumisen osuus oli lis\u00e4\u00e4ntynyt 19 prosentista 26 prosenttiin. Palautuminen ty\u00f6aikana oli lis\u00e4\u00e4ntynyt 14 minuutista 30 minuuttiin. Lis\u00e4ksi palauttavan unen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4ss\u00e4 ja laadussa oli tapahtunut muutoksia: palautumisen osuus unijaksosta oli lis\u00e4\u00e4ntynyt 49 prosentista 64 prosenttiin, ja sykev\u00e4livaihtelu (RMSSD) uniaikana oli kasvanut 48 ms:sta 56 ms:iin. Terveystottumuskyselyn vastausten perusteella joitain muutoksia oli tapahtunut my\u00f6s koetun stressin v\u00e4henemisess\u00e4. Tilastollisesti merkitsevi\u00e4 eroja tuloksissa ei ollut. Laadullisessa analyysiss\u00e4 harjoittelup\u00e4iv\u00e4kirjoista erottui nelj\u00e4 erilaista teemaa: harjoitteluk\u00e4yt\u00e4nt\u00f6ihin liittyv\u00e4t havainnot, positiiviset kokemukset harjoittelusta, harjoittelun haasteet sek\u00e4 kehotietoisuuteen liittyv\u00e4t havainnot. Applied relaxation is an em-pirically investigated and validated evidence-based coping method. In previous studies heart rate variation has not been a measurement for evaluating the effects of applied relaxation. The purpose of this Master\u2019s Thesis is to study whether an applied relaxation intervention has ef-fects on the participants\u2019 stress and recovery levels by measuring heart rate variation, and also to study the participants\u2019 experiences of practicing relaxation and its\u2019 effects on their lives.\n\nTwelve participants, of which nine were women and three were men (mean age 42 \u00b111), took part in a 10-week applied relaxation intervention in March-November of 2014. The intervention included a once-a-week group session and independent daily practice, from which the partici-pants were instructed to conduct a personal experiences journal. The study included three heart rate variation measurements: pre- and post-intervention and a 3-month-follow-up. The meas-urements were conducted with Firstbeat-analysis device, which measures the participants\u2019 heart rate variation for three days during their day to day life. The participants answered a health be-havior questionnaire prior to each measurement. The measurements were analyzed statistically with a repeated measures analysis of variance and answers to the questionnaire with Friedman\u2019s test. A qualitative analysis was also used to study the participants\u2019 experiences of the applied relaxation method by analyzing their practice diaries and written feedback collected post-intervention.\n\nThe amount of stress increased between pre-intervention and 3-month-follow up from 50 % to 53 %, and the amount of recovery also increased from 19 % to 26 %. Recovery time during working hours increased from 14 minutes to 30 minutes. Sleep quality had also improved: the amount of recovery during sleep had increased from 49 % to 64 % and heart rate variation (RMSSD) increased from 48 ms to 56 ms. When looking at answers from the health behavior questionnaire, the participants had also become more physically active, felt less stressed and had an increased sense of well-being. The changes in measurements were not statistically sig-nificant. The participants\u2019 experiences of practicing relaxation were divided into four themes: observations of the practice, positive practice experiences, challenges in practicing and observa-tions of body awareness.
