The effects of degree of disturbance and restoration on within community homogenization

Biodiversiteetti on maailmanlaajuisesti laskusuunnassa. Biologisella...

description Biodiversiteetti on maailmanlaajuisesti laskusuunnassa. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää: 1. Global biodiversity is declining and it is strongly connected to species invasions, extinctions and changing habitats. These patterns are also causing increasing similarity between and within communities. This process is called biological homogenization. Biological homogenization has ecological and evolutionary consequences that can affect the future resilience and resistance of communities. Thus it is also possible that restoration of degraded communities might be compromised if homogenization has affected their recovery potential. A peatland restoration aims to reviving ecosystem functioning and diversity. However, there is a possibility that reaching these goals becomes harder as a result of the homogenization process. The aim of this study is to find out (1) whether the degree of disturbance affect within site similarity of peatlands plant communities and (2) can restoration recover the original within site heterogeneity of community and is the effect of restoration on community similarity dependent on the degree of disturbance? The study is implemented on plant communities of boreal peatlands in southern Finland in 38 sites that fall in 3 categories: pristine, drained and restored sites. The results considering species present absence data (i.e. no abundances) show that stronger disturbance increased similarity within plant communities compared to less disturbed parts of the peatland sites. There was evidence of homogenization also within restored peatland plant communities when compared to pristine communities. In addition, the degree of disturbance affected homogenization within peatland plant communities restored 5 years ago. However, when the abundance of species was taken into account drained and restored peatland plant communities where more heterogeneous within site compared to pristine communities. This is most likely related to more stable peatland plant communities in pristine sites where dominant most abundant species have established their places within site. My results show that homogenization is strongly perspective related.
