Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 kuinka fyysisen aktiivisuuden taso vaikuttaa aivovolyymeihin, kehonkoostumukseen ja fyysiseen kuntoon nuorilla monozygoottisilla (MZ) mieskaksosilla, jotka ovat diskortantteja liikunnan suhteen. \nTutkimusaineistoon poimittiin systemaattisesti v\u00e4est\u00f6pohjaisesta FITFATTWIN- kaksostutkimuksesta yhdeks\u00e4n tervett\u00e4 monozygoottista mieskaksosparia (N= 18) i\u00e4lt\u00e4\u00e4n 32-35v, jotka olivat diskortantteja liikunnan suhteen viimeisen kolmen vuoden ajalta. Haastattelujen pohjalta laskettiin keskiarvoindeksi kuvaamaan fyysisen aktiivisuuden m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 MET-tunteina viimeiselt\u00e4 kolmelta vuodelta (MET-tunnit/p\u00e4iv\u00e4, METh). Aivojen eri tilavuusmuuttujat laskettiin kokoaivojen magneettikuvista (MK). Kehonkoostumus mitattiin Dexa- ja InBody-mittareilla, ja lis\u00e4ksi kest\u00e4vyyskunto testattiin polkupy\u00f6r\u00e4-ergometritestill\u00e4, josta hengityskaasuja ja maksimaalista hapenottoa mitattiin spiroergometri-j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4ll\u00e4.. Aineisto analysoitiin IBM SPSS Statistics 20-ohjelmalla. Fyysisen aktiivisuuden (METh) m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n yhteytt\u00e4 kehonkoostumukseen, kest\u00e4vyyskuntoon ja aivovolyymeihin tarkasteltiin pienen aineiston Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxonin (MWW) -testill\u00e4, sek\u00e4 Spearmanin korrelaatiokertoimen avulla.\nMWW\u2013testin parittaisen analyysin mukaan aktiivisemmalla kaksosella (ka 4.5 METh) oli alhaisempi kehon rasvaprosentti (P=.04) ja korkeampi hapenotto (P=.001) verrattuna inaktiiviseen kaksoseen (ka 1.4 METh). Fyysinen aktiivisuus oli suuntaa antavasti, mutta ei tilastollisesti merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti, yhteydess\u00e4 maksimaaliseen hapenottoon (r=0.48, P=0.23) ja aivo-selk\u00e4ydinnesteen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n (r=0.50, P=0.21) aktiivisilla kaksosilla. Yhdistetty aivojen harmaa ja valkea-ainevolyymi (GM+WM) oli suuntaa-antavasti yhteydess\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4iseen fyysiseen aktiivisuuteen (r=-0.57, P=0.11) inaktiivisilla kaksosilla. \nTutkimusaineiston perusteella korkeampi fyysinen aktiivisuus on yhteydess\u00e4 matalampaan rasvam\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n, korkeampaan hapenottoon ja sill\u00e4 saattaa olla yhteytt\u00e4 suurentuneeseen aivo-selk\u00e4ydinnesteen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n nuorilla ja terveill\u00e4 mieskaksosilla. Gray and white matter volumes play a significant role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate how physical activity affects brain volumes, body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness on young adult monozygotic twins discordant for physical activity.\n From FITFATTWIN cohort we selected 9 young adult male monozygotic twin pairs (age range 32-35 yr) discordant for leisure time physical activity during the past 3 years. After interviews we calculated a mean index for leisure time during the past 3 yr (METh/day). Measurements of brain volumes were calculated from whole brain magnetic resonance imaging. Body composition was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and InBody equipment. Aerobic capacity was also tested by spiroergometry. Study results were analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics 20 \u2013 program. Association of the physical activity level with body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness and brain volumes were analyzed by Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon \u2013test and Spearman\u2019s correlation suitable for small data sample. \nAccording to pairwise analysis the active twin (mean 4.5 METh) had lower body fat percentage (P=.04) and higher cardiorespiratory fitness (P=.001) compared to the inactive co- twin (mean 1.4 METh). Physical activity was slightly, but not statistical significantly, connected to higher cardiorespiratory fitness (r=0.48, P=0.23) and volume of cerebrospinal fluid on active twins. Gray matter volume plus white matter volume together were slightly connected to higher inactivity (r=-0.57, P=0.11). \nAccording to this study higher physical activity was associated to lower fat percentage, higher cardiorespiratory fitness and it also might be linked to higher amount of cerebrospinal fluid on young male monozygotic twins. Physical inactivity might have connection to larger combined gray and white matter.
