Tutkimukseni tavoitteena oli tuottaa tietoa terveystieto-oppiaineen opettamisesta ja oppimisesta, terveystiedon tavoitteista sek\u00e4 asenteista terveystieto-oppiainetta kohtaan.\r\n\r\nTutkimukseni oli luonteeltaan laadullista. Tutkimusaineisto (n=16) ker\u00e4ttiin kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 2013 puolistrukturoiduilla teemahaastatteluilla ja analysoitiin aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6isell\u00e4 sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysill\u00e4. Tutkimukseen osallistui kymmenen yl\u00e4koulun 8-luokan oppilaiden vanhempaa ja kuusi terveystiedon opettajaa. Vanhemmat ja opettajat edustivat muutamaa Keski-Suomen alueella toimivaa yl\u00e4koulua.\r\n\r\nOpettajien ja vanhempien n\u00e4kemykset terveystiedosta tiivistettiin seitsem\u00e4\u00e4n eri teemaan. Teemat olivat 1) luulotietoa ja erilaisia k\u00e4sityksi\u00e4 terveystiedosta, 2) tavoitteena oppia el\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4 varten, 3) opetusta s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6llisesti, monipuolisesti ja eri tarpeet huomioiden, 4) vastuu oppimisesta ja hyv\u00e4n opettajan merkitys, 5) positiivinen ja arvostava asenne terveystietoa kohtaan, 6) terveys koulun ja kodin yhteisty\u00f6n\u00e4 ja 7) keskustelut terveydest\u00e4 kotona.\r\n\r\nSek\u00e4 oppilaiden vanhemmat ett\u00e4 opettajat pitiv\u00e4t oikean tiedon ja valmiuksien v\u00e4litt\u00e4mist\u00e4 t\u00e4rke\u00e4n\u00e4 terveystiedon opetuksessa. Heid\u00e4n n\u00e4kemyksens\u00e4 oli, ett\u00e4 tavoitteet voidaan saavut-taa ajankohtaisiin teemoihin paneutuvalla, moniulotteisella ja yhteistoiminnallisella opetuksella. Terveystietoa tuli vanhempien ja opettajien mielest\u00e4 opettaa v\u00e4hint\u00e4\u00e4n yksi vuosiviikkotunti jokaisella yl\u00e4koulun vuosiluokalla. Vanhemmat ja opettajat perustelivat n\u00e4kemyksen sill\u00e4, ett\u00e4 jatkuva ja tasainen opetus tukee lasten ja nuorten tervett\u00e4 kasvua ja kehityst\u00e4 sek\u00e4 terveystiedon kest\u00e4v\u00e4n tietoperustan muodostumista.\r\n\r\nHaasteltavien mukaan terveystiedon keskeinen tavoite oli muodostaa oppilaille monipuolinen k\u00e4sitys terveysosaamisesta ja el\u00e4m\u00e4nhallintataidoista. T\u00e4rke\u00e4ksi koettiin esimerkiksi terveellisten el\u00e4m\u00e4ntapojen sis\u00e4llytt\u00e4minen osaksi terveystiedon opetusta. Terveystiedon opettajilta odotettiin asiantuntijuutta, oppiaineen hallintaa ja hyvi\u00e4 sosiaalisia taitoja. Tutkimuksessani nousi esiin my\u00f6s toiveet oppiainerajat ylitt\u00e4v\u00e4st\u00e4 yhteisty\u00f6st\u00e4 koulun sis\u00e4ll\u00e4 sek\u00e4 kodin mukaan ottamisesta terveystiedon opetukseen esimerkiksi yhteisten pelis\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00f6jen luomisen ja osallistavien kotiteht\u00e4vien kautta.\r\n\r\nTutkimukseni mukaan terveystieto on oppiaineena l\u00e4hell\u00e4 oppilaiden arkea ja se on t\u00e4rke\u00e4 osa lasten ja nuorten tervett\u00e4 kasvua sek\u00e4 n\u00e4iden kehityksen tukemista. The objective of the study is to provide information on the teaching and learning strategies of health education as well as on perceptions on health education as a curriculum subject.\r\n\r\nThe study employs qualitative methods in order to answer these questions. The data (n = 16), compiled from ten eighth grader parents and six health education teachers in early 2013, have been gathered by semistructured interviews (SSI) and examined through content analysis. All of the interviewees reside or work in Central Finland.\r\n\r\nThe perceptions of both the students and the teachers of health education can be categorized in seven specific themes. These themes are as follows: 1) the differing perceptions on health education, 2) the objective to acquire life skills, 3) comprehensive and regular teaching, 4) role of the students and duties of the teachers, 5) positive attitudes on health education, 6) home-school cooperation with regard to health, and 7) the presence of discussion on health at home\r\n\r\nEffective transmission of proper knowledge is the main objective of health education. This objective may most efficiently be achieved through a multidimensional and cooperative method of teaching. Health education should, according to both parents and teachers, be taught at least one hour per week throughout the secondary school. Continual teaching of health education is crucial for the growth and development of early teens.\r\n\r\nThe objective of health education should, according to the interviewees, be the improvement of the life skills of the students. In order to do this, it is necessary to include instructions for a healthy lifestyle into the curriculum of health education. Teachers of health education are supposed to possess expertise on the subject, subject management, and good social skills. This study also confirms that both parents and teachers aspire to include health education to the general curriculum in a broader sense and to strengthen the cooperation between school and parents.\r\n\r\nIt is evident that health education is important for the growth and development of the students in early teenage years. Besides being taught in school, the importance of the home environment and family support is obvious when educating students on health issues.
