Viime vuosikymmenin\u00e4 monet tutkijat ovatkin ehdottaneet siirtymist\u00e4 englannin opettamiseen kansainv\u00e4lisen\u00e4 kielen\u00e4, jolloin opetuksen tavoitteena on oppijan kulttuurienv\u00e4lisen kompetenssin parantaminen. T\u00e4ll\u00f6in erityisesti kulttuurienv\u00e4linen pragmatiikka sek\u00e4 kulttuurinen tietoisuus ovat suuressa roolissa. Vaikka kulttuuriselle monimuotoisuudelle olisi tekstikirjamateriaaleissa kysynt\u00e4\u00e4, tutkimukset ovat osoittaneet, ett\u00e4 kulttuurit, joissa englantia puhutaan p\u00e4\u00e4asiallisena kielen\u00e4, eritoten brittil\u00e4inen ja yhdysvaltalainen kulttuuri, hallitsevat edelleen oppimateriaaleja. Tekstikirjat eiv\u00e4t my\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n usein tarjoa materiaalia kulttuurienv\u00e4lisen pragmatiikan opetukseen. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkielman p\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n\u00e4 on tarkastella eri kulttuurien esiintyvyytt\u00e4 sek\u00e4 pragmaattisen tiedon esittely\u00e4 Suomen yleisimmin k\u00e4ytetyss\u00e4 yhdeks\u00e4nnen luokan englannin kielen oppikirjassa. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan mit\u00e4, miss\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4rin ja miten eri kulttuureita esitet\u00e4\u00e4n, sek\u00e4 miss\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4rin ja miten oppikirjassa esitet\u00e4\u00e4n kulttuurienv\u00e4lisen pragmatiikan strategioita.\nTutkimus toteutettiin tarkastelemalla yl\u00e4koulun englannin oppikirjaa Spotlight 9 sis\u00e4lt\u00f6analyysin avulla, k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en sek\u00e4 laadullisia ett\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llisi\u00e4 metodeita. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 vaikka eri kulttuureita on esitelty oppikirjassa verrattain paljon, brittil\u00e4inen ja yhdysvaltalainen kulttuuri olivat aineistossa selv\u00e4sti n\u00e4kyvimpi\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi tulokset osoittivat, ett\u00e4 aineistossa ei esitelty kulttuurienv\u00e4lisen pragmatiikan strategioita, vaan pragmaattinen tieto keskittyi l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 kulttuurisidonnaisten kohteliaisuusnormien esittelyyn. Vaikka tutkimuksen aineistona oli vain yksi kirja, voidaan tulosten perusteella ehdottaa oppikirjojen suunnittelijoille kulttuurisen sek\u00e4 pragmaattisen materiaalin monipuolistamista.
