T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, millainen on liikunnanopettajien ty\u00f6nkuva ja miten he suhtautuvat liikunnallisen toimintakulttuurin luomiseen koulussa. Tarkoituksena oli lis\u00e4ksi selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, millaista on liikunnanopettajien koettu osaaminen sek\u00e4 koulutustarve kouluyhteis\u00f6n fyysisen aktiivisuuden ja hyvinvoinnin edist\u00e4misess\u00e4. Tutkielma on osa laajempaa Liikuntakasvatuksen laitoksen tutkimus- ja kehitt\u00e4mishanketta \u201dOppilaiden fyysisen aktiivisuuden edist\u00e4minen teoriasta k\u00e4yt\u00e4nt\u00f6\u00f6n\u201d.\r\n\r\nTutkimuksen aineistoa ker\u00e4ttiin liikunnanopettajilta s\u00e4hk\u00f6isell\u00e4 kyselylomakkeella Liikunnan ja Terveystiedon Opettajat ry:n rekisterin kautta 15.12.2014\u201331.9.2015 v\u00e4lisen\u00e4 aikana. Kyselyyn vastasi yhteens\u00e4 189 opettajaa, joista 58 (31 %) oli miehi\u00e4 ja 131 (69 %) naisia. Opettajien suhtautumista ja valmiuksia fyysisen aktiivisuuden edist\u00e4jin\u00e4 koulussa mitattiin Valmiudet koulun liikunnallistamisessa -mittarilla, jossa fyysisen aktiivisuuden edist\u00e4mist\u00e4 tarkasteltiin nelj\u00e4n ulottuvuuden kautta: 1) liikunnanopetus 2) koulun muu liikunta 3) sis\u00e4inen yhteisty\u00f6 ja 4) ulkoinen yhteisty\u00f6. Eroja suhtautumisessa ja valmiuksissa tarkasteltiin sukupuolittain, kouluasteen sek\u00e4 koulun liikunnallistamisesta olevan kokemuksen mukaan.\r\n\r\nLiikunnanopettajat suhtautuvat my\u00f6nteisimmin fyysisen aktiivisuuden edist\u00e4miseen liikunnanopetuksen ja koulun muun liikunnan avulla, ja varauksellisemmin taas ulkoisen ja sis\u00e4isen yhteisty\u00f6n hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4miseen. Opettajat, joiden koulut olivat mukana Liikkuva koulu -ohjelmassa, suhtautuivat kaikkiin koulun liikunnallistamisen ulottuvuuksiin my\u00f6nteisemmin verrattuna opettajiin, joiden koulut eiv\u00e4t olleet ohjelmaan osallistuneet. Liikunnanopettajat kokivat osaamisensa vahvimmaksi liikunnanopetuksen ja sis\u00e4isen yhteisty\u00f6n osalta, kun taas koulun muun liikunnan ja ulkoisen yhteisty\u00f6n osalta osaaminen koettiin heikommaksi. T\u00e4ydennyskoulutusta kaivattiin useimmin liikuntateknologian k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n, koulun liikunnallisen toimintakulttuurin k\u00e4ynnist\u00e4miseen sek\u00e4 erilaisten liikuntamuotojen opetukseen.\r\n\r\nVaikka liikunnanopettajan ty\u00f6nkuva on laajentumassa, on liikunnanopetus edelleen ammatin ydinteht\u00e4v\u00e4. Laadukkaasti toteutettu liikunnanopetus muodostaa hyv\u00e4n perustan my\u00f6s laajemmalle liikunnallisen toimintakulttuurin edist\u00e4miselle koulussa. Department of Sport Pedagogy, University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Master\u2019s thesis in Sport Pedagogy, 76 pages, 5 appendices\r\n\r\nPart of a physical education teacher\u2019s job description is the promotion of physically active schools. The purpose of this study was to find out how well prepared physical education teachers are, referring to their attitudes and competence, for enhancing the role of physical activity in their school. We explored physical education teachers\u2019 job description and their attitude to building an active school culture. Another aim was to examine both physical education teachers\u2019 competence, as they have experienced it, in advancing physical activity and wellbeing in the school community and what kind of competence they needed more in building an active school culture. The thesis is part of a more extensive research and development project called \u2018Promoting students\u2019 physical activity, from theory to practice\u2019 and carried out by the Department of Sport Pedagogy.\r\n\r\nThe material for the study was gathered by using an electronic questionnaire through the register of the Association of Physical and Health Educators in Finland from December 15th 2014 to September 31st 2015. A total of 189 teachers responded to the enquiry; of them 58 (31 %) men and 131 (69 %) women. The teachers\u2019 attitudes and experienced competence in promoting physical activity in school were measured by using indicator called \u2018Competences for Enhancing Physical Activity in School\u2019, in which the promotion of physical activity was discussed via the following four dimensions: 1) teaching of physical education; 2) other physical activities in school; 3) internal cooperation; and 4) external cooperation. Differences in attitudes and perceived competence were looked at in accordance with gender, level or stage of education and with the experience that is available about enhancing physical activity in school.\r\n\r\nPhysical education teachers have the most positive attitudes to the promotion of physical activity through teaching of physical education and other physical activities in school, while their attitudes were the most negative to view of using internal and external cooperation. Those teachers whose schools were involved in the program \u2018Finnish Schools on the Move\u2019 held a more positive attitude to all efforts at enhancing physical activity in school than did teachers whose schools had not participated in the program. The physical education teachers felt their competence was at the highest level concerning the teaching of physical education and internal cooperation, whereas it was the lowest regarding other physical activities in school and external cooperation. More than for anything else, further education was needed to use physical education technology, to start building an active school culture and to teach various forms of physical education.\r\n\r\nThe most common duty was teaching of physical education despite the changing nature of job description. The physical education teachers possessed good attitudes and competences for promoting physical activity, particularly in physical education classes. However, there is need for development in the physical education teachers\u2019 ability to build an active school culture and, in enhancing physical activity elsewhere than within physical education, the teachers need more concrete models for action. One future challenge in building an active school culture will be the use of both internal and external resources in supporting physical education teachers\u2019 attitudes and competences for promoting students\u2019 physically active way of life.
