Pro gradu –tutkielmani keskeinen tavoite oli selvittää kuinka tutkittavat henkilöt kuvaavat painon kertymistä, sen syitä ja toisaalta onnistunutta painonpudotusta ja sen taustalla vaikutta- via tekijöitä. Tavoitteena oli lisätä ymmärrystä siitä, mitkä tekijät vaikuttavat lihomiseen ja laihtumiseen. Tavoitteena oli myös kerätä kokemuksellista tietoa painonpudotuksesta yhtei- sössä nimeltä Herbalife. Tutkimus on toteutettu laadullisena tutkimuksena ja sen tieteenfilosofinen lähtökohta on feno- menologis-hermeneuttinen. Tutkimusaineisto on kerätty sähköpostikyselyllä henkilöiltä, jotka ovat osallistuneet Herbalife painonpudotushaasteryhmiin. Aineiston analysoimiseksi on käy- tetty sisällön analyysia. Analyysikehyksen muodosti neljä eri osa-aluetta: painonkertyminen, syyt laihduttamiseen, painonpudotusprosessi ja laihduttamisen hyöty. Painonkertymisen yleisimpänä syynä oli stressi, masennus ja muut psyykkiset tekijät. Mielen vähäiset voimavarat aiheuttivat sen, että tutkittavat eivät jaksaneet huolehtia omasta hyvin- voinnistaan. Stressi vaikutti syömiseen epäedullisesti, joka näkyi painonnousuna. Muita syitä painonkertymiselle olivat raskaudet, loma-aika, lapsuuden uskomukset, liikkumattomuus ja epäusko omasta onnistumisesta. Suurin syy laihduttamisen aloittamiselle oli halu tehdä muutoksia omassa hyvinvoinnissa. Myös fyysiset terveyshaasteet ja parempi jaksaminen arjessa kannustivat laihdutusprojektin aloittamiseen. Monet tutkimukseen osallistuneista henkilöistä olivat täydellisen kyllästyneitä olotilaansa ja halusivat siksi muutosta vallitsevaan tilanteeseensa. Jokaisen tutkittavan laih- duttamispäätökseen vaikutti halu voida kokonaisvaltaisesti paremmin. Painonpudotusprosessi oli aaltoileva, mutta etenevä. Jokainen tutkittava koki Herbalife tuot- teiden helpottaneen painonpudotusta huomattavasti. Ehdotonta onnea tuotteet eivät kuiten- kaan tuoneet vaan vaihtelevat ja stressaavat elämäntilanteet hankaloittivat välillä painonpudo- tusprosessin etenemistä. Ryhmän ja ohjaajan tuki sekä Herbalife tuotteet koettiin kuitenkin merkittävänä apuna painonpudotuksessa ja painonpudotusprosessin jatkumisessa hankalam- mista vaiheista huolimatta. Laihduttamisen keskeisimpinä hyötyinä koettiin mielialan koheneminen ja onnellisuuden li- sääntyminen. Myös fyysinen kunto koheni ja liikunta koettiin miellyttävämmäksi keventy- neen vartalon myötä. Mahdollisissa tulevissa tutkimuksissa olisi mielenkiintoista selvittää miten esimerkiksi kun- nan järjestämät laihdutusryhmät, jotka kokoontuvat vain määrätyn ajan, eroavat Herbalife pai- nonpudotusryhmästä, jossa asiakas halutessaan jatkaa osana yhteisöä. Olisi mielenkiintoista päästä selvittämään painonpudotus tuloksen pysyvyyttä kahdessa täysin erilaisessa painonpu- dotusryhmässä. Jokinen, Emmi (2016). The purpose of this master thesis was to find out how the persons involved in this study de- scribe their weight gain and it`s reasons, and also successful weight loss and these things that has made it possible. The aim was to increase understanding of the factors that influence weight gain and weight loss. The aim was also to gather empirical information on weight loss in community called Herbalife. The research was conducted as a qualitative science and its philosophical basis is a phenome- nological- hermeneutic. The research was collected by e-mail inquiry from people who have taken part in the Herbalife weight loss challenge groups. The content analysis has been used to analyse the material. Analysis of the frame formed of four different areas: gaining weight, the reasons for dieting, weight loss process and weight loss benefits. The most common reason to gaining weight was stress, depression and other psychological factors. The mind limited resources meant that the subjects were not able to take care of their own health. Stress adversely affected by eating, which was reflected in gaining weight. Other reasons for gaining weight were pregnancies, holidays, childhood beliefs, lack of exercise and disbelief on their own success. The main reason for the initiation of dieting was the desire to make changes in their well-be- ing. Also, physical health challenges and a better ability to cope in everyday life encouraged the project to start losing weight. Many of the individuals participating in this study were fed up with their presence and therefore wanted to have a change in the prevailing situation. To everyone ́s decision to lose the weight effected the desire to feel better overall. The weight loss process was wavy, but progressive. According to all the participants, using the Herbalife products made weight loss easier. Absolute happiness the products did not brought but varied and stressful life situations have hampered the process of weight loss pro- gression. However, the support of the group and the wellness coach as well as Herbalife prod- ucts, was seen as an important aid in weighting loss and to going on with the weight-loss pro- cess, despite of the difficult stages. The main benefits of loosing weight were improvement in mood and increase happiness. Also, the physical condition got better and physical activity was felt more comfortable with the slimmer body. Possible future studies, it would be interesting to find out how, for example, the municipality organized weight loss groups that meet in a specified time, differ from Herbalife weight loss groups, in which the customer can choose to continue as part of the community. It would be interesting to research the stability of weight loss results in two completely different weight loss groups.
