Yliopistojen rahoitus painottuu yh\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n kansainv\u00e4lisyydest\u00e4 palkitsemiseen, koska menestys-t\u00e4 mitataan kansainv\u00e4lisill\u00e4 mittareilla. Samalla englanti on yleistynyt opetusk\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4. Suomen kieli ei ole kansain-v\u00e4lisyyden vasta-argumentti, vaikka sellaisena se v\u00e4lill\u00e4 esitet\u00e4\u00e4n. Tutkimuksessani keskityn siis selvitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n suomen kielen asemaa korkeimman opetuksen kielen\u00e4 tutkimalla asenteita ja arvoja, joita opintoasiainp\u00e4\u00e4llik\u00f6iden haastatteluista, opiskelijoilla teetetyst\u00e4 kyselyst\u00e4 ja yliopiston strategisista dokumenteista voidaan n\u00e4hd\u00e4 suomen kielt\u00e4 kohtaan. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on saada vastaus seuraaviin kysymyksiin: 1. Millainen on suomen kielen asema yliopiston opetuskielen\u00e4? 2. Millainen on suomen kielen k\u00e4yt\u00f6n nykytilanne yliopiston opetuksessa? 3. Millaisia arvoja ja asenteita yliopiston henkil\u00f6kunnalla ja opiskelijoilla on suomen kielt\u00e4 kohtaan? \r\n\r\nTutkimukseni kuuluu sosiolingvistiikan tutkimuskentt\u00e4\u00e4n ja hy\u00f6dynn\u00e4n my\u00f6s asennetutkimusta teoriapohjanani. Suomalaisessa sosiolingvistiikassa on aikaisemmin tutkittu l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 murteita ja ihmisten asennoitumista murteen puhujiin. Tutkimukseni on my\u00f6s vahvasti kielipolitiikan, eli kielensuunnittelun ja varsinkin kielen aseman suunnit-telun tutkimusta. Kielensuunnittelua tehd\u00e4\u00e4n yliopistolla varsinkin strategisissa teksteiss\u00e4, joilla pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n ohjaa-maan henkil\u00f6st\u00f6\u00e4 opetuskielivalinnoissa. Kirjallisiksi dokumenteiksi olen valinnut Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston kielipo-liittisen ohjelman, ja kielipolitiikan toimenpideohjelman, Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston tutkintos\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6n, Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yli-opiston strategian ja sen toimenpideohjelman vuosille 2013\u20132014. Lis\u00e4ksi tarkastelen kolmen tiedekunnan opetus-suunnitelmia. Olen haastatellut kolmen tiedekunnan opintoasiainp\u00e4\u00e4llik\u00f6it\u00e4 ja teett\u00e4nyt kyselyn valittujen tiedekun-tien opiskelijoilla. Analyysimenetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00e4n aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6ist\u00e4 sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysia, jonka avulla sek\u00e4 erittelen ett\u00e4 analysoin aineistossa esiintyvi\u00e4 asenteita.\r\n\r\nTutkimuksessani on selvinnyt, ett\u00e4 suomen kielt\u00e4 arvostetaan edelleen, koska se n\u00e4hd\u00e4\u00e4n ymm\u00e4rryksen kielen\u00e4 ja se puolustaa paikkaansa arvokkaana osana yliopiston perustaa, kulmakiven\u00e4. Monella tieteenalalla englantia kui-tenkin tarvitaan enemm\u00e4n ja suomen koetaan olevan jopa out of date kun puhutaan termist\u00f6n kehityksest\u00e4 ja tieteen kielest\u00e4. Suomen kielen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 opetuskielen\u00e4 on v\u00e4hentynyt koska sek\u00e4 vieraskielisten opettajien ett\u00e4 opiskelijoi-den kanssa pit\u00e4\u00e4 toimia englanniksi ja muun muassa opetusmateriaali on yh\u00e4 useammin englanninkielist\u00e4, eik\u00e4 termist\u00f6\u00e4 kaikilla aloilla edes suomenneta. Toisaalta suomi n\u00e4hd\u00e4\u00e4n kansainv\u00e4lisyyden vastakohtana, toisaalta \u00e4idinkielell\u00e4 on mahdollisuus hahmottaa laajoja kokonaisuuksia, joten suomen kieli n\u00e4hd\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s syvemm\u00e4n ym-m\u00e4rryksen kielen\u00e4. Tutkimukseni perusteella voidaan havaita ett\u00e4 opetushenkil\u00f6st\u00f6n ja opiskelijoiden motivaatio ja arvostus suomen kielt\u00e4 kohtaan heikkenee kansainv\u00e4listymisen my\u00f6t\u00e4. Tutkimukseni on merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4 my\u00f6s muiden korkeakoulujen kielen aseman suunnittelun kannalta, sill\u00e4 tulevaisuudessa on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 kiinnitt\u00e4\u00e4 erityist\u00e4 huomiota suomen kielen asemaan ja korkeakoulujen tulee suunnitelmallisesti kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 aidosti monikielist\u00e4 toimintaymp\u00e4ris-t\u00f6\u00e4, jossa my\u00f6s suomen kielt\u00e4 arvostetaan osana monikielisyytt\u00e4.", "language": "fi", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.abstract", "value": "Finnish society and universities are going through change towards internationalization. Universities funding is partially based upon the amount of their international publications and study programs. This usually means increase of teaching in English. Finnish language isn\u2019t opposite to internationalization even though sometimes they are viewed as such. This study examines the status of Finnish language as language of higher education by studying attitudes and values that students, Heads of Academic affairs and university has towards Finnish language. Main questions of this study were: What is the status of Finnish language as language of higher education? 2. What is the current situation of Finnish language as the language of education in university? 3. What kind of values and atti-tudes faculty and students of university have towards Finnish language?\r\n\r\nMy theoretical background is based on sociolinguistics and studies of attitudes. Finnish sociolinguistic research has mainly examined dialects, variation and attitudes towards speakers of dialects. I\u2019m also using language policy (in this study language planning) and further more language status planning as a theoretical background. University is using language planning for example in strategic documents to guide faculty with their decisions about language of education. Material of this Thesis consists strategic documents of University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 (for example language policy and University\u2019s strategy), interviews of Heads of Academic Affairs and student questionnaire. As analysis method I have used content analysis especially grounded theory.\r\n\r\nMy findings are: Finnish language is still valued because it\u2019s considered to be language of higher understanding for native speakers and because university is traditionally Finnish. In many programmes terminology is in English and Finnish language is considered to be out of date. The use of Finnish language is decreasing because there are more international teachers and students who require the use of English and teaching materials are more often in English. In some fields of sciense material isn\u2019t translated in Finnish anymore.
