Molemmat n\u00e4ist\u00e4 monimuotoisuuden tasoista \u2013 lajin sis\u00e4inen ja lajien v\u00e4linen monimuotoisuus \u2013 muokkautuvat ekologisten ja evolutiivisten prosessien kautta, jotka puolestaan syntyv\u00e4t ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n olosuhteista. Ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n ominaisuuksien ja niist\u00e4 syntyvien prosessien tiedet\u00e4\u00e4n vaikuttavan molempiin monimuotoisuuden tasoihin samankaltaisesti: t\u00e4m\u00e4n teorian mukaan niiden v\u00e4lill\u00e4 tulisi siten l\u00f6yty\u00e4 positiivinen korrelaatio. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa pyrin etsim\u00e4\u00e4n laajalti huomiotta j\u00e4\u00e4neest\u00e4 ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6st\u00e4, vesist\u00f6st\u00e4, positiivista yhteytt\u00e4 hiekkaputkimadon (Pygospio elegans) geneettisen monimuotoisuuden, sek\u00e4 sen elinymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n pohjael\u00e4inlajien monimuotoisuuden v\u00e4lill\u00e4. Samalla halusin selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, onko tutkituilla ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n ominaisuuksilla (sedimentin ominaisuudet, veden suolaisuus, ja sen l\u00e4mp\u00f6tila) osuutta havaittuihin tuloksiin. Tanskan Isefjord-Roskilde Fjord murtovesist\u00f6st\u00e4 ker\u00e4ttiin nelj\u00e4lt\u00e4 eri paikalta kolmena eri aikana n\u00e4ytteit\u00e4 hiekkaputkimadosta sek\u00e4 paikallisista lajeista. Niiden v\u00e4lilt\u00e4 l\u00f6ytyi vahva, positiivinen korrelaatio, joka kertoo siit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 sek\u00e4 geneettinen monimuotoisuus lajin sis\u00e4ll\u00e4, ett\u00e4 lajien v\u00e4linen monimuotoisuus eli\u00f6yhteis\u00f6ss\u00e4 reagoivat samalla tavalla ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ns\u00e4 kautta toimiviin prosesseihin. Hiekkaputkimadon sis\u00e4ist\u00e4 monimuotoisuutta selitt\u00e4vi\u00e4 ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n ominaisuuksia olivat sedimentin laatu ja sen sis\u00e4lt\u00e4m\u00e4n orgaanisen aineksen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4, ja lajien v\u00e4list\u00e4 monimuotoisuutta sedimentin laatu sek\u00e4 veden suolaisuus ja sen vaihtelu. Vaikka havaittuun suhteeseen vaikuttaisivat my\u00f6s ep\u00e4suorat tekij\u00e4t, kuten lajien v\u00e4linen kilpailu, positiivisen korrelaation havaitseminen merkitsee ett\u00e4 yhden monimuotoisuuden tason ennustaminen toisen tason, tai jonkin ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n tekij\u00e4n kautta, voisi olla mahdollista. For the field of population genetics, these variants are genes or alleles within a species; and for the field of community ecology, they are species within a community. Both of these biodiversity levels \u2013 genetic diversity and species diversity \u2013 are affected by similar ecological and evolutionary processes, which in turn are shaped by characteristics of the environment. Several studies have shown that responses to the environmental characteristics are linked to variable relationships between the two levels of diversity. Notably, theory predicts a positive relationship due to similar forces acting in similar ways on both of the levels. Studies of these relationships have mainly focused on terrestrial systems, and have remained largely unexplored in marine environments. Finding a covariation between the diversity levels outside of terrestrial conditions and linking it to the characteristics of the environment would outline the similarities between processes controlling genetic and species diversities. In this study, a relationship between the genetic diversity of a worm Pygospio elegans and the species diversity of the local invertebrate community was examined with different environmental characteristics (sediment characteristics, salinity, and temperature) that could explain the observed patterns. Samples of P. elegans and local macrofauna were collected from four different sites and three different times within a year at Isefjord-Roskilde Fjord estuary complex in Denmark. A strong positive relationship was found, which indicates that both the genetic diversity within this species, and the species diversity within these communities, react similarly to the mechanisms acting through their environment. The environmental characteristics that seemed to affect the patterns most were the sediment quality and its organic content for the genetic diversity, and the quality of the sediment, the water salinity and its fluctuation for the species diversity. Although implicit processes, such as competition, cannot be excluded from the interpretation, the positive correlation found in this study implies that it could be possible to predict one level of diversity based on the other, or based on one of environmental characteristics that affects both levels. For example, time consuming taxonomic analyses could be substituted by genetic analyses of P. elegans alone, from which the level of species richness could be estimated.
