Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat seitsem\u00e4n yhdysvaltalaisen luokanopettajan ja menetelm\u00e4n kehitt\u00e4j\u00e4n n\u00e4kemykset visuaalisesta lukutaidosta ja sen merkityksist\u00e4. Tutkimus kiinnittyy laadullisen tutkimuksen metodologiaan: aineiston keruu tehtiin puolistrukturoidulla kyselylomakkeella ja analyysi toteutettiin aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6isesti k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysia ja fenomenografiaa.\r\nK\u00e4ytt\u00e4jien mukaan visuaalinen lukutaito on erilaisen, ajan my\u00f6t\u00e4 monimutkaistuvan visuaalisen materiaalin lukemista ja siit\u00e4 kirjoittamista. K\u00e4ytt\u00e4jien visuaalisessa lukutaidossa korostuivat fasilitaation k\u00e4yt\u00e4nteet, kun taas oppijoiden visuaalista lukutaitoa l\u00e4hestyttiin erilaisten taitojen ja niiden soveltamisen n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Visuaalista materiaalia k\u00e4ytettiin ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4misen edist\u00e4-miseen sek\u00e4 tiedon ja mielihyv\u00e4n saamiseen. Visuaalisen lukutaidon k\u00e4sitteellistys ei kertonut siit\u00e4, kuinka hyvin visuaalista lukutaitoa toteutettiin opetuksessa. Lis\u00e4ksi yht\u00e4 vastaajaa lukuun ottamatta visuaalisen lukutaidon kehitt\u00e4minen ei ollut ensisijaista menetelm\u00e4ss\u00e4. Visuaalisuudelle ja visuaaliselle lukutaidolle sen osana annettiin sek\u00e4 v\u00e4lineellisi\u00e4 ett\u00e4 itseisarvollisia merkityksi\u00e4.\r\nOpetuksessa oppijan kokonaisvaltaisen kehityksen, kasvun ja oppimisen tukeminen on keskeisemp\u00e4\u00e4 kuin yksitt\u00e4isen taidon, kuten visuaalisen lukutaidon, kehitt\u00e4minen. On this research, the views of seven American elementary teachers and the developer of the method are examined from the perspective of visual literacy. The way the research data was collected and analyzed (for example using phenomenography) follows the principles of qualitative research, even though the data collection was done by half-structured questionnaire. \r\nThe research shows that visual literacy is reading of and writing about different visual material, which gets more complex over time. Users conceptualized their visual literacy through facilitation. Learner\u2019s visual literacy was connected to multiple skills and to their adaptions. Visual material was used to develop understanding and to draw knowledge and pleasure from looking that material. The conceptualization of visual literacy did not tell how well visual literacy teaching was implemented in practice. Except for one user, developing visual literacy was not the number one priority of the method. Visuality, including visual literacy, was valued for itself and for its instrumental purposes.\r\nIn teaching context, supporting the holistic development, growth and learning of learner is more important than developing specific skills, like visual literacy. Furthermore, learner\u2019s aesthetic development and visual literacy are intertwined to language development.
