Vielä ei ole kuitenkaan julkaistu tutkimusta sisäsyntyisen aerobisen kunnon vaikutuksesta neurogeneesiin. Tässä tutkimuksessa käytettiin kahta erilaista rottakantaa: rotat oli jalostettu aerobiselta kunnoltaan joko hyväkuntoisiksi tai huonokuntoisiksi. Kaksikymmentä HCR-rottaa (high capacity runner) ja 20 LCR-rottaa (low capacity runner) tutkittiin, jotta saataisiin tietoa hippokampuksessa jakautuvien solujen määrän eroavaisuuksista kantojen välillä. Tutkimuksen rotat eivät harjoittaneet aerobista liikuntaa. Hippokampuksen alueelta kerättiin viipaleita, jotka värjättiin Ki67-värjäyksellä. Jakaantuvat solut laskettiin kahdenkymmenen rotan (10 HCR-rottaa ja 10 LCR-rottaa) jyvässolukerroksesta. HCR-rotilla oli 87.1% enemmän jakautuvia soluja ja tulos oli tilastollisesti erittäin merkitsevä. Ero voi johtua lisääntyneestä solujen jakautumisesta HCR-rotilla, vähentyneestä jakautumisesta LCR-rotilla tai molemmista. Cognitive skills like effective memory and learning are important for welfare and the hippocampus is a brain area that is strongly involved in these functions. The hippocampus is also one of the few places where adult neurogenesis, birth of new neurons, occurs. Adult neurogenesis seems to be an important factor in hippocampus-dependent cognitive skills. One factor that strongly increases neurogenesis is aerobic exercise. However there is no published research on what kind of a role intrinsic aerobic capacity has on neurogenesis. In this research two different lines of rats were used: rats were bred to have high or low intrinsic aerobic capacity. Twenty HCR (high capacity runner) and 20 LCR (low capacity runner) rats were studied to investigate the differences in the number of proliferating cells. The rats did not exercise. Sections of the hippocampus were collected and stained with an antibody binding to Ki67-protein. Proliferating cells were counted from the granule cell layer from 20 rats (10 HCR and 10 LCR). HCR rats had 87.1% more proliferating cells and the result was statistically very significant. The difference can be the result of enhanced proliferation in HCR rats, decreased proliferation in LCR rats or both.
