Despite this fact scarce research has been done in this field.\r\nMoreover, comparing to the progress that has been achieved in other areas of sociology\r\nof sport, much more work needs to be done, in sports transnational migration both at a\r\ntheoretical and empirical level. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine how\r\nthe migration period in Russia is perceived by Finnish professional ice hockey players\r\nby exploring and interpreting their personal experiences. More specifically, it is asked in\r\nthis study for which reasons Finnish ice-hockey players migrate to Russia. Moreover,\r\ndimensions related to the adaptation process and how it affects the performance of the\r\nathletes among with the perceived by the players\u2019 differences between the Finnish and\r\nRussian ice hockey cultures are examined.\r\nA qualitative phenomenological research method is applied in this thesis. This\r\nparticular method fits well for the purpose of the study, because it allows to develop a\r\ncomposite description and interpretation of the essence of the experience of the\r\nprofessional Finnish ice hockey players who have migrated to Russia. The data is\r\ncollected by semi-structured interviews of athletes who have played in Kontinental\r\nHockey League (KHL) for Russian clubs. Thematic content analysis was utilized to\r\nanalyze the collected data.\r\nThe results of this study reveal, that it\u2019s important to focus on the experiences of the\r\nmigrants themselves as well as on the complexity of the relationships in which they are\r\ninvolved inside and outside the play of field. Under this focus the personal and\r\nprofessional motives of Finnish ice hockey players for migration are examined and\r\ndiscussed. Moreover, issues of adapting into a new environment both on and off the ice\r\nhockey ring are addressed, considering the cultural differences between Russia and\r\nFinland. Finally, from the data derived it seems that although commingle of sport\r\ncultures has taken place, the notion that a global homogenization of ice hockey culture\r\nis occurring is not supported.\r\nImplications for future research are also discussed, such as interviewing a larger number\r\nof players, immediately before their departure from Finland and right away after their\r\narrival. Thus, deeper insights regarding the fulfillment of their expectations would be\r\nreached.
