Tavoitteena oli my\u00f6s, ett\u00e4 saatua kokeellista dataa voidaan k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 apuna laadittaessa MX-80-tyyppisen bentoniitin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytymist\u00e4 kuvaavia numeerisia malleja.\r\n\r\nVeden kulkeutumisen ja muodonmuutosten tutkiminen MX-80:ssa perustui r\u00f6ntgenmikrotomografiaan. R\u00f6ntgentomografiassa pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n rekonstruoimaan tutkittavan n\u00e4ytteen vaimenemiskertoimesta kolmiulotteinen malli kaksiulotteisia r\u00f6ntgen- eli projektiokuvia apuna k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en. T\u00e4m\u00e4n menetelm\u00e4n toimivuus perustuu siihen, ett\u00e4 MX-80-n\u00e4ytteen kastuessa sen tiheys - ja siten vaimenemiskertoimen arvo - alkaa lokaalisti muuttua. R\u00f6ntgentomografialaitteiston ottamissa projektiokuvissa t\u00e4m\u00e4 n\u00e4kyy kuvien harmaas\u00e4vyarvojen muuttumisena. N\u00e4ytteess\u00e4 tapahtuvia muodonmuutoksia voidaan m\u00e4\u00e4ritt\u00e4\u00e4 tutkimalla MX-80:ssa olevien inerttien partikkeleiden paikan muutoksia kuivan ja deformoituneen n\u00e4ytteen rekonstruktioiden v\u00e4lill\u00e4.\r\n\r\nKaiken kaikkiaan mittaussarjoja tehtiin kolmelle eri MX-80-n\u00e4ytteelle, joiden kuivatiheys oli 1,6 g/cm3. Ensimm\u00e4inen r\u00f6ntgenmikrotomografialaitteistolla teht\u00e4v\u00e4 mittaus eli skannaus suoritettiin ennen kastelun aloittamista. Kastelun aloittamisen j\u00e4lkeen n\u00e4yte skannattiin yhdeks\u00e4n kertaa; viimeinen skannaus tehtiin 14 vuorokautta kastelun aloittamisesta. N\u00e4ytteeseen imeytyneen veden m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 eri ajanhetkill\u00e4 saatiin selville punnitsemalla n\u00e4yte skannausten yhteydess\u00e4. Kyll\u00e4styneess\u00e4 tilassa MX-80-n\u00e4ytteiden tiheys oli noin 2,16 g/cm3. Kokeelliset tulokset analysoitiin numeerisesti MATLAB-ohjelmistoa apuna k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en.\r\n\r\nSaatujen tulosten perusteella puhdistetulle bentoniitille kehitetyt kokeelliset menetelm\u00e4t soveltuvat l\u00e4hes sellaisenaan my\u00f6s rakeisemman MX-80-tyyppisen bentoniitin tutkimiseen. Lis\u00e4ksi eri n\u00e4ytteille saadut tulokset ovat hyvin l\u00e4hell\u00e4 toisiaan, mink\u00e4 perusteella k\u00e4ytetyn menetelm\u00e4n voidaan arvioida toimivan veden kulkeutumisen ja muodonmuutosten mittaamiseen bentoniitissa. Referenssitulosten ja -menetelmien puutteesta johtuen tulosten ep\u00e4varmuuden kvantitatiivinen analysointi on kuitenkin haastavaa.", "language": "fi", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.abstract", "value": "The main objective of this thesis was to study when the experimental methods developed for the refined bentonite can be used when studying MX-80-bentonite which has different micro- and macrostructure compared to the refined bentonite. By using these boundary conditions the other purpose of this work was to measure water transport and deformations in MX-80-bentonite. The third objective of this thesis was then to get experimental data for developing numerical models of MX-80-bentonite.\r\n\r\nStudying water transport and deformations in MX-80-bentonite was based on the X-ray micro tomography. The purpose of X-ray tomography is to reconstruct three dimensional model of the linear attenuation coefficient of the object by using two dimensional radiographs. This is possible because when absorbing water both the density and the linear attenuation coefficient of MX-80-sample is locally changed. This can be seen by increasing grayscale values of the radiographs. Because there are also inert particles in MX-80-bentonite it is possible to calculate deformations of samples by comparing locations of these particles in reference reconstruction and in deformed reconstruction.\r\n\r\nAll in all there were three MX-80-samples with dry density 1,6 g/cm3. The first measurement was done before wetting was started. After the wetting was started the sample was scanned nine times so that the last scanning was 14 days after the beginning of wetting. The amount of absorbed water was determined by weighting the sample before and after scanning. When the sample was saturated its density was about 2,16 g/cm3. After that the data was analyzed numerically by using MATLAB.\r\n\r\nIt turned out X-ray micro tomography methods developed for the refined bentonite can be used almost unchanged also for MX-80-bentonite. Furthermore, the results for three different samples were so similar that it can be estimated the methods used in this thesis were valid.
