Martinjärven valuma-alueella on turvetuotantoa, mutta vertailujärvenä toimineella Iso Kivijärven valuma-alueella sitä ei ole. Järvien ominaisuudet ovat paljolti samankaltaisia, molemmat ovat matalia, pieniä humusjärviä. Martinjärvellä piilevien monimuotoisuudessa oli suurempaa luonnollista vaihtelua kuin Iso Kivijärvellä. Iso Kivijärvellä monimuotoisuus ja lajimäärät ovat olleet laskussa 1900-luvun ajan aiempiin vuosisatoihin verrattuna. Molemmat järvet ovat muuttuneet rehevämmiksi. Järvien rehevöitymiskehitys alkoi eroosion voimistumisen, humuksen määrän lisääntymisen ja piilevälajiston muutosten perusteella jo 1930-luvulla. Maatalous oli ensin syynä rehevöitymiskehitykseen ja 1960-luvulta alkaen myös metsätalouden ojitukset. Martinjärvi on ollut lajiston perusteella rehevimmillään 1930-luvulla ja 2000-luvulla. Iso Kivijärvi on ollut rehevimmillään 1970-luvulta vuoteen 2000, mutta myös 2000-luvulla. Turvetuotanto Martinjärven valuma-alueella alkoi 1970-luvun lopussa. Iso Kivijärvi oli rehevämmässä tilassa 1970-luvulla kuin Martinjärvi. Järvien kokonaisfosforipitoisuudet ja lajisto on ollut vuosina 2004–2012 samankaltaista ja molemmat järvet ovat rehevöityneet vielä 2000-luvulla johtuen todennäköisesti metsätalouden kunnostusojituksista. Mallinnetut kokonaisfosforipitoisuudet aliennustavat mitattuja vanhempia pitoisuuksia, mutta vastaavat hyvin viimeaikaisia mitattuja pitoisuuksia vuosilta 2004–2012. Piileväaineiston perusteella voidaan sanoa, että turvetuotannolla ei ole ollut suurempaa vaikutusta Martinjärven ekologisen tilan kehitykseen. In this study, ecosystem changes influenced by peat production and other land use were studied in two central Finland forest lakes, Martinjärvi and Iso Kivijärvi. The study was based on paleolimnological diatom analysis and the period for examination was from the 17th century to this day. There is peat production in the catchment area of Martinjärvi but not in the catchment area of the reference lake Iso Kivijärvi. Properties of the lakes are largely similar, both are shallow small humic lakes. In Martinjärvi, there was more natural variation in diversity of diatoms than in Iso Kivijärvi. In Iso Kivijärvi, the diversity and number of species have been declining in the 20th century compared to earlier centuries. Both lakes are now eutrophic. In both lakes, eutrophication process began already in the 1930`s as indicated by intensification of erosion, increasing quantities of humus and changes in diatom species composition. Agriculture was the first to blame for the eutrophication process and it was followed by forestry related drainage starting in the 1960`s which increased eutrophication. Martinjärvi has been at its most eutrophic phase in the 1930´s and in the 21st century based on diatoms. Iso Kivijärvi had its most eutrophic phase from the 1970´s to year 2000 but also during the 21st century. Peat production at Martinjärvi´s catchment area began at the end of the 1970`s. Iso Kivijärvi was probably more eutrophic than Martinjärvi between 1970`s and year 2000. In both lakes, total phosphorus concentrations and species composition have been similar during recent years (2004-2012) and both lakes have become even more eutrophic during recent years probably due to drainage related to forestry. Modeled total phosphorus concentrations underestimate older measured concentrations but correspond well with the latest measured concentrations during years 2004-2012. Based on the present data of diatom remains, it can be said that peat production has not had any significant effect on the ecological status of Martinjärvi.
