However, it is debated whether critical thinking \r\nshould be taught in academic foreign language courses at the tertiary level, which \r\nprimarily aim to develop students\u2019 language and communication skills. This localized, \r\nexploratory research examines Finnish university students\u2019 self-reported critical \r\nthinking skills and dispositions after completing the compulsory academic English \r\ncourses. The aim of the research is to examine what skills and dispositions students feel \r\ncompetent in, and discover if there is a correlation between students\u2019 self-reported \r\ncritical thinking ability and such factors as gender, age, years spent in university, and the \r\nimportance attributed to critical thinking. The second aim is to understand how students \r\nview critical thinking and to identify activities that contributed to their critical thinking \r\ndevelopment. A mixed-methods questionnaire was used to collect data, which was \r\ndeveloped on the basis of Facione\u2019s (2013) framework of critical thinking, consisting of \r\nsix skills and seven dispositions. Twenty-four students participated in the study, \r\nincluding students from various faculties, such as education, humanities, business, \r\ninformation technology, and sports and health sciences. The data was collected at a \r\nuniversity in Central Finland in the fall of 2014, and was analyzed using nonparametric \r\nstatistical methods. The results indicate that the participants are quite confident in their \r\ncritical thinking ability but have a rather narrow view of the skills and dispositions that \r\nconstitute critical thinking. The students also perceived reading and social interaction as \r\nimportant factors contributing to their critical thinking development. The findings \r\nsuggest that an infusion method, which focuses on field-specific subject matters and \r\nuses activities that explicitly focus on various components of critical thinking, can \r\nincrease students\u2019 awareness of critical thinking skills and dispositions.
