Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten HIT ja MIT vaikuttavat oikean kammion glukoosi- ja rasvahappometa-boliaan sekä sen rakenteellisiin ja toiminnallisiin parametreihin. Yhteensä 28 harjoittele-matonta, normaalipainoista tervettä miestä (ikä 40-55 v.) satunnaistettiin HIT (n = 14) ja MIT (n =14) ryhmiin. Molemmilla ryhmillä oli kuusi harjoituskertaa kahden viikon aikana. HIT-ryhmä teki 4-6 x 30 s maksimaalista kuntopyörävetoa 4 minuutin palautuksilla, ja MIT-ryhmä pyöräili 40-60 minuuttia teholla 60% VO2max. Oikean kammion metaboliaa tutkittiin positroniemissiotomografialla (PET) ja rakenteellisia ja toiminnallisia parametreja magneettikuvauksella (MRI). Päätuloksena saatiin, että oikean kammion glukoosinotto laskee (p = 0.001 harjoituksen vaikutukselle) sekä HIT- (-22 %) että MIT-harjoittelulla (-15 %), mutta rasvahappometaboliassa ei tapahtunut muutosta (p = 0.96). Diastolinen ja systo-linen tilavuus kasvoivat (HIT 5 % ja 6 %, MIT 3 % ja 7 %, p = 0.002 ja 0.007), mutta ejektiofraktio pieneni (HIT -2 %, MIT -4 %, p = 0.034). Mitkään muutokset eivät kuitenkaan olleet erilaisia ryhmien välillä (p > 0.05 ryhmä*harjoitus –vaikutukselle). Kahden viikon harjoittelulla oli vaikutusta oikean kammion glukoosimetaboliaan ja tilavuuteen, mutta ei sen massaan tai iskuntilavuuteen. HIT has been shown to rapidly improve the pumping capacity of the heart and aerobic fitness similarly compared to more time-demanding traditional moderate-intensity training (MIT) such as jogging. As the most common reason people cite for their inactivity is the lack of time, HIT could be an effective alternative to improve both individual and public health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of HIT and MIT on the right ventricular glucose and fat metabolism along with its structural and functional parameters. In total, 28 untrained, lean and healthy men of age 40-55 years were randomized into HIT (n = 14) and MIT (n = 14) groups. Both groups had six training sessions within two weeks. In a session, the HIT group did 4-6 x 30 s all-out cycling with 4 min recovery between bouts, whereas the MIT group cycled for 40-60 min at 60% VO2max. Right ventricular metabolism was measured with positron emission tomography (PET) and structural and functional parameters with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The main finding was that the right ventricular glucose uptake was decreased (p = 0.001 for the training effect) after both HIT (-22 %) and MIT (-15 %) whereas fat metabolism remained unchanged (p = 0.96). Further, end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes were increased (HIT 5% and 6%, MIT 3% and 7%, p = 0.002 and 0.007) whereas ejection fraction was decreased (HIT -2%, MIT -4%, p = 0.034). However, none of the changes were different between the training groups (p > 0.05 for the group*training effect). Hence, two weeks of training induced adaptations in right ventricular glucose metabolism and volume while its mass and stroke volume remained unchanged.
