Maailmalle lähtevän nuoren perhe ja 5. Ikääntyvä perhe. Perheelle tarjottua tukea, siihen kohdistuneita toiveita sekä perheiden kokemuksia vertaistuesta tarkasteltiin näiden viiden luokan näkökulmasta. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin sisällön analyysiä. Löydösten perusteella useimmiten perheet kokevat, että liikuntavammaisille tarkoitettu fysioterapeuttinen tuki on järjestetty tarpeita vastaavaksi ja lapsen hyvän itsetunnon kehittymistä ja perhettä tukevaksi. Erilaisten tukien saaminen olisi kuitenkin tehtävä perheille selkeämmäksi esimerkiksi palveluohjauksen avulla. Koulun tuki perheille oli haastateltujen perheiden mielestä vaihtelevaa. Perheet kokevat, että akateemisiin taitoihin panostetaan paljon, ehkäpä jopa arjen hallinnan taitojen oppimisen kustannuksella. Vertaistuki koettiin antoisaksi ja vahvaksi, se voi kulkea perheiden eri elämänvaiheiden läpi koko lapsen kasvun ajan ja tukea elämän haastavissa muutosvaiheissa. The study examines and evaluates the experiences and the opinions of families with a sick or a disabled child over the support for the child and the family. The experiences of the families are studied from the moment of the child’s birth and later in the different stages of the evolution of the family. The second focus of the study was to map the families’ aspirations for the support for the child and the whole family. Lastly, the study engaged with the experiences of the families with peer support. The research data was collected by interviewing four families with a sick or a disabled child. During the contents analysis of the data the development of the family was divided to five distinct categories: 1. the infant stage, 2. the toddler stage, 3. the family with school aged children, 4. the family with juvenile members and 5. the ageing family. The type and quality of the support that was received by the families were studied through using these categories. The results of the study are divided into three outcomes. Firstly, the study suggests that families’ considered the physical support directed to their children is generally sufficient to respond to the needs of their child and the family. In particular, the study found that the physical support encouraged the child’s self-esteem. However, the families under study hoped that the different types of support should be made clearer and easier to approach, for instance through an support system counsellor /advisor. Secondly, the interviewed families considered that the support offered by schools varied. The families felt that school paid great deal of attention to academic skills and abilities. However, this was sometimes done on the expense of practical skills (that are equally important for the children). Lastly, the families considered peer support as a strong source of support that can be sustained through different stages of the child’s and the families’ development. Peer support can be a vital source of support when making challenging life choices and when facing great changes. Syftet med denna studie var att se närmare på hur stödet till en familj med ett sjukt eller ett funktionshindrat barn ser ut i de olika faserna som familjen går igenom under barnets uppväxt. Dessutom ställdes frågor angående familjernas önskemål och förväntningar gällande stödet till barnet och familjen samt redogörelser av familjens eventuella erfarenheter av (s.k.) kompisstöd. Forskningsdata samlades genom att intervjua fyra familjer med ett sjukt eller funktionshindrat barn. Under analysen delades data i fem kategorier som utgör familjernas olika utvecklingsfaser. 1. Spädbarnsåldern, 2. Lekåldern, 3. Skolåldern, 4. Sena tonåren och självständigt boende och 5. Den åldrande familjen. Med hjälp av dessa kategorier och med innehållsanalysen tittade man närmare på varje utvecklingsfas och på stödet som fanns till barnet och familjen under dessa faser. Dessutom tittade man närmare på vad familjen förväntade sig av stödet under de olika utvecklingsfaserna samt vilka erfarenheter familjerna hade av (s.k.) kompisstöd. Det visade sig att familjerna huvudsakligen uppfattade att de funktionshindrade barnens fysikaliska (stöd)terapi var väl ordnad och viktig för hela familjen och att terapin också befrämjade barnets psykiska utveckling på ett positivt sätt genom att stärka självkänslan hos barnet. Däremot önskade sig familjerna att det skulle vara lättare att få fram information kring de olika stöd alternativen som finns att tillgå för familjer med sjukt eller funktionshindrat barn. Familjerna som deltog i forskningsprojektet hade olika uppfattningar kring stö- det som barnet fått under sin skoltid i allmänhet var föräldrarna av den åsikten att man i skolan lade kanske väl mycket vikt på de akademiska färdigheterna, vissa gånger till och med på de dagliga färdigheternas bekostnad. Kompisstö- det ansågs som en givande stödform som kan medföra ett rikt stöd för familjen och individen i de olika faserna av livet.
