Vanhempien kokemuksia rokotuspäätöksenteosta

description Lasten vanhempien on huomattu suhtautuvan lasten rokotuksiin entistä varovaisemmin ja valikoivammin. A(H1N1) -pandemiainfektiota vastaan käytetyn rokotteen ja narkolepsia-tapausten todettu yhteys toi vanhemmille epävarmuutta lasten rokotuttamiseen. It has been noted that children's parents are taking a more cautious and selective approach towards vaccinations than previously. Questioning the need for vaccinations and growing more concerned about the injurious effects have increased. As the diseases for which vaccinations are given have become all the more rare and obscure, many may feel that vaccinating against them is unnecessary. This study aims to depict the factors that affect parents' decision-making in acquiring vaccinations. We endeavour to gain more knowledge of the aspects that influence the parents' positive or negative stance towards vaccination. Research data was collected in April 2014 by interviewing the parents (n=8) of children under school age. The interviewees came from six separate families. Six of the interviews were conducted as individual interviews, and one as a pair interview. The analysis method used in this study was Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. According to the results of this study, parents felt that the vaccinations included in the national vaccination programme were important and necessary to their children's health promotion. Among the key factors affecting parents' decision-making were the trust they placed on health care personnel and the parents' knowledge about children's vaccinations and the diseases they prevent. Some parents were concerned about the safety of influenza vaccinations and other inoculations outside the vaccination programme. The verified connection between the vaccination used against the A(H1N1) pandemic infection and occurrence of narcolepsy increased parents' uncertainty concerning the inoculation of their young. Those involved in this study felt that the controversy brought about by the narcolepsy incidents and consequent uproar, as well as the debates about vaccination and its actual need, made them more critical regarding, in particular, influenza vaccinations and inoculations outside the national programme. Parents deemed important that society maintain a high vaccination coverage for children in line with the national vaccination programme, and felt that people who refuse these types of vaccinations are acting unfairly. As a conclusion, we can say that parents do not question using the inoculations included in the national vaccination programme, but influenza and other extraneous vaccinations are not considered essential. What is seen as a realistic threat in this day and age are the diseases spreading from elsewhere into Finland - diseases that we have already eradicated via vaccination but are now making a comeback. In promoting our citizens' health, it is of utmost importance to trust the health officials' recommendations and the general health care system. In order to most effectively tackle the challenges we face with the potentially decreasing vaccination coverage, the officials need to be aware of the factors influencing decisions to refuse vaccination. Increased awareness of what the parents wish to know about the vaccinations and the diseases they can prevent is also important.
