Tutkimus on toteutettu kyselylomakkeella, joka on lähetetty kuntien johtaville nuorisotyöntekijöille sekä etsiville nuorisotyöntekijöille kesällä 2014. Vastauksien avulla on saatu selville, että kyselyyn osallistuneesta 170 vastaajasta 91,8 % hyödyntää työssään sosiaalista mediaa ja vastaajien resurssit sen hyödyntämiseen ovat suurimmalla osalla hyvät tai erittäin hyvät. Keskimäärin sosiaalisen median osuus nuorisotyöntekijöiden työajasta on tutkimuksen mukaan vajaa kolmasosa ja nuorisotyöntekijät ovat hyödyntäneet sitä keskimäärin 3 vuotta. Kaikista eniten hyödynnetään yhteisöpalvelua ja näistä palveluista eniten Facebookia. Eniten ja lähes yhtä paljon sosiaalista mediaa käytetään tiedotukseen, tavoittamiseen ja yhteydenpitoon. Suurimmat ongelmat sosiaalisen median hyödyntämisessä on huoli nuorten tietoturvasta ja työntekijöiden ajanpuute. Sosiaalisen median hyvinä puolina nähtiin muun muassa sen nopeus ja helppous sekä se, että niin monet nuoret käyttävät sitä. Sosiaalisen median käytöstä ei juurikaan kerätty palautetta asiakkailta, eikä sitä hyödyntäviltä työntekijöiltä. Master thesis, which examines what kind of resources youth workers have to take advantage of social media and how do they use social media in their work. The study also examined social media applications’ problems and advantages in youth work. The research was conducted with a questionnaire that has been sent 2014 to the municipalities’ leading youth workers, as well as for those looking for marginalized youth. Conclusion was that 91.8% of 170 participants use social media in youth work and their resources to take advantage of social media is for most good or very good. About third of youth workers’ working hours went with the social media and they had used it for averagely 3 years. The most popular social media service is community service and especially Facebook. Social media in youth work is especially used for announcements, reaching out and communicating with others. Disadvantages of social media are young people’s poor knowledge of information security and workers' lack of time. Advantages of social media in youth work are speed and ease of use as well as the fact that so many young people are using it. Feedback isn’t much collected about the use of social media either from customers or employees.
