Museologiassa se kuuluu museografian osa-alueeseen, kuten Peter van Mensch on sen m\u00e4\u00e4ritellyt.\n\nKumimateriaali on jo l\u00e4ht\u00f6kohdiltaan ep\u00e4vakaa materiaali. Kumimateriaaleista valmistetuilla objekteilla on muita objekteja lyhyempi elinkaari ja objektin tulessa museoon kumimateriaalin hajoamisprosessit ovat jo nopeutuneet. N\u00e4in ollen niiden aika museossa on huomattavasti lyhyempi kuin monien muiden objektien. T\u00e4m\u00e4 k\u00e4y hyvin esille tutkielman materiaalianalyysiosiossa.\n\nKumiobjektit tarvitsevat erityisolosuhteet s\u00e4ily\u00e4kseen hieman pidemp\u00e4\u00e4n kuin niiden suunniteltu elinkaari edellytt\u00e4\u00e4. Erityisolosuhteilla tarkoitetaan viile\u00e4\u00e4 s\u00e4ilytyst\u00e4. My\u00f6s muita erikoiss\u00e4ilytysmuotoja on kumimateriaalista valmistetuille objekteille suositeltu, mutta t\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkielmassa k\u00e4sitelt\u00e4v\u00e4n kumiobjektikokoelman s\u00e4ilytyssuunnitelmassa ne eiv\u00e4t ole t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 realistisia vaihtoehtoja. \n\nPro gradu-tutkielma koostuu viidest\u00e4 luvusta, jotka k\u00e4sittelev\u00e4t kumiobjektikokoelman hoidon eri alueita. \nTutkielmassa k\u00e4yd\u00e4\u00e4n l\u00e4pi kumimateriaaleja, niiden ominaisuuksia sek\u00e4 valmistus- ja hajoamisprosesseja, jotka ovat t\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 kumiobjektien s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4misen kannalta. \nKumiobjektikokoelman hoidon osalta k\u00e4yd\u00e4\u00e4n l\u00e4pi poistojen tarvetta, joka on kumiobjektien kohdalla t\u00e4rke\u00e4 osa-alue. Kumiobjektien hajoamisprosesseilla on negatiivisia vaikutuksia muihin objekteihin. \nTampereen Museoiden Kokoelmakeskukseen on suunniteltu viile\u00e4 s\u00e4ilytystila, joka on osittain jo toteutunutkin. Siin\u00e4 olevat kehitystarpeet tulevat esille t\u00e4ss\u00e4 pro gradussa. Lis\u00e4ksi s\u00e4ilytyksen osalta k\u00e4sitell\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s kumiobjektien s\u00e4ilytykseen soveltuvia materiaaleja. \nKumimateriaaleista tehtyjen objektien tarkka materiaalitunnistus on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 objektin s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4misen kannalta. Se voi jopa m\u00e4\u00e4ritt\u00e4\u00e4 kannattaako objektia edes ottaa kokoelmaan. Tarkka materiaalianalyysi on kuitenkin eritt\u00e4in haasteellista ilman analyysilaitteita, kuten FTIR-spektrometri\u00e4, ja hyvi\u00e4 referenssiaineistoja. T\u00e4t\u00e4 problematiikkaa k\u00e4sitell\u00e4\u00e4n t\u00e4ss\u00e4 pro gradu-tutkielmassa tapaustutkimusten muodossa. \nKumiobjektien materiaalien hajoamistuotteita k\u00e4sitell\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s tutkielman luvussa 6., jossa on tapaustutkimus kumimateriaalista valmistetun suojapuvun vitriinin sis\u00e4ilman laadun mittauksesta. \n\nLopputuloksena voidaan todeta, ett\u00e4 kumimateriaalien s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4minen vaatii museolta sek\u00e4 taloudellisia ett\u00e4 henkil\u00f6st\u00f6resursseja, jotka ovat v\u00e4hentym\u00e4ss\u00e4 t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 vallitsevan taloudellisen tilanteen takia. Voidaan my\u00f6s todeta, ett\u00e4 kumiobjektien hoito ja s\u00e4ilytys tulee jatkossakin vaatimaan konservaattoreilta sek\u00e4 tutkimus- ett\u00e4 kehitysty\u00f6t\u00e4.", "language": "fi", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.abstract", "value": "This thesis for master\u2019s degree in museology is a follow-up study about a development strategy for storage of a collection of a museum objects made of rubber materials. The development of a strategy for storing the rubber object collection began in 2008 as a master\u2019s degree thesis in conservation. In museology both theses are in the area of museography as Peter van mensch classifies conservation in his PhD thesis. \nRubber materials are inherently unstable. This results in shorter lifespan of the object. When a rubber object is given to the museum collection, it has been used and then neglected so the deterioration process in the rubber material has already sped up. Because of this process most rubber objects have shorter lives in museum collections than other objects. This becomes evident in material analysis. \nThe preservation of rubber objects requires special conditions and methods. One type of the special conditions is cool storage for the rubber object collection. Other special conditions include oxygen-free storage and cold storage. This thesis concentrates on cool storage as the other storage options are not realistic at this moment in time. \nThis thesis consists of five parts, each of which deals with different parts of care and preservation of the rubber object collection. First part includes a short history of rubber, an introduction of some basic rubber materials, their properties and manufacturing and deterioration processes of different rubber materials.\nThe second part concentrates on care and preservation of the rubber collection. It is recognized that disposals have to be a part of the collections strategy, because of the short lifespan and the damage the deterioration products cause in other objects. The Collections Centre of Tampere Museum, there are two cool storage rooms for the rubber objects. The development of these rooms is a work in progress. There are still part to be developed. In addition to this the thesis introduces some preservation materials for rubber materials. The study of these materials is continuing after the thesis.\nOne important part of preserving rubber materials is their identification and analysis into their properties. It can even determine whether it is sensible to include a rubber object in the museum collection or not, as the resources for preservation and care are limited. Accurate identification of rubber materials is difficult even with proper analysing equipment and reference libraries. The problems of identification are featured in case studies in this thesis. The deterioration products of rubber materials are also featured in part 6 in which a study about air-quality in display case of rubber suit is introduced. \nIn conclusion it can be established that preservation of rubber materials demands economical, human and time resources from the museum. These resources are declining at the same time the number objects is increasing.
