It aims to create an overview of the type and the frequency of output-based activities in two different textbook series. The analysis examines textbooks from two different courses. The purpose of the study is to find out if there are gaps in the textbooks' activity repertoire so that teachers can complement them if they consider it necessary. No studies could be found that would provide an aspect to contribute to the present study. The data that consists of the units of activity in the textbooks is analyzed and categorized according to the method of theory guided content analysis. The activities are divided into main categories depending on whether they are output-based or not, and whether they are oral or written. After that they are divided into sub-categories depending on what type of written or oral activities they are. The analysis found out that, firstly, there is a relatively high number of output-based activities in the textbooks under scrutiny. Secondly, there are gaps in the representation of units of activity. There are only few collaborative dialogue activities in the textbooks. Furthermore, there was only one function-oriented written activity in all of the textbooks. The results of the analysis were compared to the demands that the national core curriculum for upper secondary schools sets for upper secondary school students. The demands are based on the competence scales stated in the Common European framework of reference for languages (CEFR). The comparison was made in order to find out if the representation output-based activities in the textbooks meet the demands set by the national core curriculum and the CEFR. The textbooks were mostly successful in meeting these demands, but it is possible that certain gaps in the representation of output-based activities hinder upper secondary school students' possibilities to answer to the demands that are set for them.", "language": "en", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.abstract", "value": "Tutkielma analysoi suomalaisia lukion englantia vieraana kielen\u00e4 opettavia (EFL) oppikirjoja. Vaatimukset pohjautuvat Yhteisen eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen asettamiin taitotasoihin. Vertailu tehtiin, jotta saataisiin selville, vastaavatko oppikirjojen kielentuottamisen teht\u00e4v\u00e4t LOPSin ja Yhteisen eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen vaatimuksiin.
