Aineisto koostuu kolmesta nauhoitetusta suomentunnista. Osallistujia ovat nelj\u00e4 amerikkalaista suomen alkeisoppijaa, ryhm\u00e4n opettaja ja opetusassistentti (tutkija itse). Tutkielmassa analysoidaan monikielisyyden funktioita suomen oppitunneilla ja sit\u00e4, miten kielenopiskelukonteksti vaikuttaa suomen tuntien kielellisiin k\u00e4yt\u00e4nteisiin. Tutkielmassa luodaan katsaus monikielisyyden tutkimukseen sek\u00e4 ensikielen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n vieraan ja toisen kielen opetuksessa. Tutkielma sijoittuu koodinvaihdon tutkimuksen viitekehykseen, mutta keski\u00f6ss\u00e4 ovat osallistujien monikieliset resurssit. Lis\u00e4ksi tutkimuksessa sivutaan luokkahuonevuorovaikutuksen tutkimusta. Tutkielmassa on laadullinen tutkimusote ja tutkielma on aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6inen. Aineistoa analysoidaan sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin keinoin ja sit\u00e4 tarkastellaan teemoittain. Analyysissa on hy\u00f6dynnetty joitakin keskustelunanalyysin keinoja, mutta analyysissa on mukana my\u00f6s varsinaisen aineiston ulkopuolista tietoa, joka perustuu tutkimuskohteen tuntemukseen. The data consists of three recorded sessions. Participants in the study are four American learners of Finnish who study Finnish at an elementary level, their teacher and a teaching assistant (the researcher herself). The study analyzes the functions of multilingualism in Finnish classes and how the context of learning affects the language practices in these classes. The study outlines multilingualism research and the use of the L1 in the second or foreign language classroom. The study can be positioned within the frame of reference of code-switching research but the focus is on the multilingual resources of the participants. In addition, the research touches on the study of classroom interaction. The study is qualitative and data-driven. The data is analyzed using content analysis and it is viewed in themes. The study implements some practices characteristic for conversation analysis but also looks at information that is beyond the actual conversational data. This information is based on observations and the fact that the researcher is well-acquainted with the teaching context. \r\n\r\nMultilingualism has many functions in the language classes. The functions are connected to the context of language learning or they have a conversational function. The teacher-led sections of the classes are often bilingual: The teacher gives the primary instructions in Finnish but more specific instructions or the negotiation of roles are conducted in English. The students use their L1 for task-management. During pair exercises, students discuss their roles and the task in the L1, but English is also used to manage and explain one\u2019s own actions. When the class discusses language or analyzes it, English is used. The students\u2019 L1 is also used when someone faces an unfamiliar word or when the class gets engaged in the negotiation of meaning. Topic of discussion has an effect on the choice of language: English is used when the class discusses issues related to Finnish culture or some practical challenge that is faced in the course of the class. In addition, discourse particles, comments or short reactions to someone else\u2019s turn are often in a different language than the rest of the sequence. Language alternation is used to create humor in the class and the L1 has an important function in creating a comfortable classroom atmosphere.\r\n\r\nThe participants communicate using multilingual resources. The vocabulary items borrowed from English often seem idiomatic: using the corresponding Finnish word would not always result in the exactly same meaning. The research offers information about interaction in a Finnish as a foreign language class and the role of different languages in a classroom.
