Tutkielma esittelee nanotimanttien historiaa ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6kohteita kokeellisen osion ohella. Kokeiden aluksi kaupallista nanotimanttien ja veden muodostamaa liuosta laimennetaan joko vedell\u00e4 tai etanolilla eri timanttikonsentraatioille. Kasvatusalusta, substraatti, kastetaan laimennettuun liuokseen, josta timantit asettuvat alustan pinnalle. Mahdollisimman pienten ja erilleen, mutta tihe\u00e4sti, asettuneiden timanttien kerrosta tavoitellaan sile\u00e4n rei\u00e4tt\u00f6m\u00e4n kalvon tuottamiseksi. Timanttikalvot kasvatetaan nanotimanttien muodostamasta kerroksesta kaasukasvatusmenetelm\u00e4\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4en.\n\nLaimennetuista nanotimanttiliuoksista m\u00e4\u00e4ritettiin dynaamisen valon siroamisen ja elektroforeettisen liikkuvuuden mittauksilla timanttien koko ja zeta-potentiaali, joka vaikuttaa timanttien paakkuuntumiseen liuoksessa sek\u00e4 niiden vuorovaikutukseen pinnan kanssa. Liuoksia k\u00e4siteltiin ultra\u00e4\u00e4nell\u00e4 ja sentrifugoimalla timanttien paakkuuntumisen v\u00e4ltt\u00e4miseksi. Asettumista puolijohtaville ja metallisille pinnoille verrattiin. Substraateille muodostuneita kerroksia tutkittiin pyyhk\u00e4isyelektronimikroskoopilla, atomivoimamikroskoopilla ja ionisuihkuanalyysilla. Mikroskooppikuvista m\u00e4\u00e4ritettiin timanttien koko, korkeusprofiili ja niiden m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 pinta-alaa kohti sek\u00e4 arvioitiin hiilen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4. Ionisuihkuanalyysill\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4ritettiin hiilen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4. Timanttien et\u00e4isyyksi\u00e4 toisiinsa tutkittiin vertaamalla oikeita mikroskooppikuvia simuloituihin kuviin ja laskemalla kuvista timanttien tiheys et\u00e4isyyden funktiona.\n\nDynaamisen valon siroamismittauksen rajakooksi nanotimanttiliuoksissa paljastui 0.2 nm, jota pienemmill\u00e4 konsentraatioilla kokomittauksen tulokset erosivat huomattavasti kuvista m\u00e4\u00e4ritetyist\u00e4 kooista. Liuoksen k\u00e4sittelyll\u00e4 ei ollut merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 vaikutusta timanttien kokoon. Pienimm\u00e4t timantit 19.0 nm ja eniten timantteja pinta-alaa kohti 4.5*10^10 cm^-2 saavutettiin piisubstraatilla, joka oli kastettu 2.0 g/l timanttikonsentraatioiseen etanoliliuokseen. Metallisilla substraateilla timantit kasaantuivat huomattavasti tiiviimp\u00e4\u00e4n kuin puolijohtavilla substraateilla. Hiilen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 oli luokkaa 3--8*10^15 cm^-2 ionisuihkulla tehdyn alkuaineanalyysin mukaan. Particle sizes and zeta potentials of dispersions were analysed with dynamic light scattering and electrophoretic mobility. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images of seed layers were taken and analysed. The surface density of carbon was determined with ion beam analysis. The density variation of nanodiamond seeds was determined and simulated.\nThe different treatments of dispersions have no effect on the particle size. The highest achieved seeding density of separated seeds was 4.5*10^10 cm^-2 and the smallest seed size was 19.0 nm both on same semiconducting substrate. On metallic substrates the particles accumulated. Surface density of carbon on semiconducting substrates was 3--8*10^15 cm^-2.
