The Internet has quickly become a major source of news to an ever growing amount of people all over the world. However, the new medium has not arrived without bringing new problems to the table. While the news now have potential to spread worldwide in a matter of minutes after publishing, also the errors now spread faster than ever before. The current correction policies of newspapers established themselves in the 1970’s. Though news have been published online for already two decades, a unified correction policy has not yet taken root. How an incorrect online article should be corrected, is a question journalists should debate on. Belieavibility of journlism seems to be on the decline and now is the time newsrooms should be able to prove their audiences why they should be trusted, and why the information they provide is worth paying for. The purpose of this research was to describe what are the online correction policies of Finnish newsrooms in theory and practice. The methods of the study was to collect and analyse information by the means of observation and interview. Eight editors in charge of the online departments of Finnish newsrooms were interviewed and a sample of 70 incorrect online articles was collected. The study is based on the analysis of the sample and transcribed interviews. The results show that though Finnish newsrooms are moving towards some standard procedures in terms of correcting their errors online, a firm and uniform policy is still lacking. In practice, the quality of online corrections vary a great deal between one newsroom to another. In addition, the online corrections of a single publisher also vary in their quality, form and content. A big portion – 26 out of 70 – of the analysed online articles were corrected contrary to the policies stated in Guidelines for Journalists. Some repeating problems were correcting the articles without informing the readers, or making the correction vague enough so that the reader cannot evaluate the graveness of the error. 16 analysed articles was not corrected at all. Grave defaults, such as removing incorrect articles from the website alltogether, are rare but still occur nevertheless. Stating the newsrooms correction policies clearly on the publishers website – a policy practiced by some of the worlds leading online newsrooms such as New Yor Times and The Guardian – has not taken root in Finland. Only one major Finnish newsmedia – the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle – state its correction policy on its website. Only one major Finnish newsroom – Hufvudstadsbladet – collects its corrections on their website. The conduted interviews point out that these matters are seen to be not important enough in order to make correction policies or corrections to more visible to the readers – or that these matters have simply not been given a thought at all. In addition, not all the Finnish newsrooms deliver written instructions about correcting online articles to their editors. Some of the existing written instructions are very brief and leave the editors to depend on oral instructing. The results suggest that Finnish online correction policies are in need of an update. Better written instructions are needed and the newsrooms should institutionalize their corrections. Clear instructions that apply to all possible errors are perhaps impossible to create. Still, Finnish newsrooms should adapt some general principles of online correcting, such as deciding how exactly the readers should be informed of a correction, and then rigorously inform their staff on how to correct and why. Above all, the newsrooms should all state their policies in their websites and start collecting their corrections on a single page so that they are easy to find. How seriously newsrooms address the issue of online correcting, is a question to be considered. After all, how journalists deal with errors tells a great deal on how concerned they are about getting their facts right. If the public feels that the newsrooms keep hiding their mistakes, the beliavibility of journalism will most likely continue it’s decline.
