Tutkimus toteutettiin analysoimalla 70 virheellisen verkkojutun otanta, sek\u00e4 haastattelemalla kahdeksaa suomalaisen tiedotusv\u00e4lineen verkkotoiminnasta vastaavaa esimiest\u00e4.\r\n\r\nTulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 vaikka verkon oikaisuk\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6t n\u00e4ytt\u00e4isiv\u00e4t pikkuhiljaa vakiintuvan my\u00f6s Suomessa, yhdenmukaiset verkko-oikaisumallit puuttuvat yh\u00e4. Oikaisuk\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6t vaihtelevat suuresti toimituksesta toiseen ja k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4 verkko-oikaisujen muoto ja sis\u00e4lt\u00f6 vaihtelevat my\u00f6s toimitusten sis\u00e4ll\u00e4. However, the new medium has not arrived without bringing\r\nnew problems to the table. While the news now have potential to spread worldwide in a\r\nmatter of minutes after publishing, also the errors now spread faster than ever before.\r\nThe current correction policies of newspapers established themselves in the 1970\u2019s.\r\nThough news have been published online for already two decades, a unified correction\r\npolicy has not yet taken root. How an incorrect online article should be corrected, is a\r\nquestion journalists should debate on. Belieavibility of journlism seems to be on the\r\ndecline and now is the time newsrooms should be able to prove their audiences why\r\nthey should be trusted, and why the information they provide is worth paying for.\r\n\r\nThe purpose of this research was to describe what are the online correction policies of\r\nFinnish newsrooms in theory and practice. The methods of the study was to collect and\r\nanalyse information by the means of observation and interview. Eight editors in charge\r\nof the online departments of Finnish newsrooms were interviewed and a sample of 70\r\nincorrect online articles was collected. The study is based on the analysis of the sample\r\nand transcribed interviews.\r\n\r\nThe results show that though Finnish newsrooms are moving towards some standard\r\nprocedures in terms of correcting their errors online, a firm and uniform policy is still\r\nlacking. In practice, the quality of online corrections vary a great deal between one\r\nnewsroom to another. In addition, the online corrections of a single publisher also vary\r\nin their quality, form and content. A big portion \u2013 26 out of 70 \u2013 of the analysed online\r\narticles were corrected contrary to the policies stated in Guidelines for Journalists.\r\nSome repeating problems were correcting the articles without informing the readers, or\r\nmaking the correction vague enough so that the reader cannot evaluate the graveness of\r\nthe error. 16 analysed articles was not corrected at all. Grave defaults, such as removing\r\nincorrect articles from the website alltogether, are rare but still occur nevertheless.\r\n\r\nStating the newsrooms correction policies clearly on the publishers website \u2013 a policy\r\npracticed by some of the worlds leading online newsrooms such as New Yor Times and\r\nThe Guardian \u2013 has not taken root in Finland. Only one major Finnish newsmedia \u2013 the\r\nFinnish Broadcasting Company Yle \u2013 state its correction policy on its website. Only one\r\nmajor Finnish newsroom \u2013 Hufvudstadsbladet \u2013 collects its corrections on their website.\r\nThe conduted interviews point out that these matters are seen to be not important\r\nenough in order to make correction policies or corrections to more visible to the readers\r\n\u2013 or that these matters have simply not been given a thought at all. In addition, not all\r\nthe Finnish newsrooms deliver written instructions about correcting online articles to\r\ntheir editors. Some of the existing written instructions are very brief and leave the\r\neditors to depend on oral instructing.\r\n\r\nThe results suggest that Finnish online correction policies are in need of an update.\r\nBetter written instructions are needed and the newsrooms should institutionalize their\r\ncorrections. Clear instructions that apply to all possible errors are perhaps impossible to create. Still, Finnish newsrooms should adapt some general principles of online\r\ncorrecting, such as deciding how exactly the readers should be informed of a correction,\r\nand then rigorously inform their staff on how to correct and why. Above all, the\r\nnewsrooms should all state their policies in their websites and start collecting their\r\ncorrections on a single page so that they are easy to find.\r\n\r\nHow seriously newsrooms address the issue of online correcting, is a question to be\r\nconsidered. After all, how journalists deal with errors tells a great deal on how\r\nconcerned they are about getting their facts right.
