Tutkielman aiheena on Internetin verkkoliikenteen kasvun haasteet, joita Internet
kohtaa lisääntyvästä liikenteen määrästä verkossa. Tietoliikenteen määrä
lisääntyy uusien palveluiden myötä, sekä laitteiden ja käyttäjien liittymisestä
verkkoon. Internetissä liikkuvan videon määrä vastaa jo yli puolta kaikesta liikenteestä
verkossa ja osuus tulee vain kasvamaan tulevaisuudessa. Tutkielma
esittelee taustatietoa tiedonsiirrosta ja verkkoliikenteestä sekä pyrkii esittelemään
nykyajan Internetin tilanteen selkeästi. Tarkoitus tutkimukselle on selvittää
mitkä ovat suurimmat teknologiset haasteet kasvavalle verkkoliikenteen
määrälle ja minkälaisia ratkaisuja niitä varten on jo olemassa tai suunnitteilla.
Tutkielma perustuu pääasiassa kirjallisuuteen ja tieteellisiin artikkeleihin aiheesta.

The subject of this thesis is the increase of Internet traffic and the challenges that
comes with it. Traffic increases with the appearance of new services available
on the Internet and also because of the growing numbers of users and devices
that are connected with each other. Video traffic already accounts for more than
a half of the overall traffic online and its share is increasing. This thesis presents
background information on data transfer and Internet traffic and also tries to
shed some light on the current state of the Internet. The purpose of this thesis is
mainly to discover the biggest technological challenges for increased Internet
traffic and to find solutions or possible future solutions for them. The thesis is
based mainly on literature and scientific articles on the topic.
