Kognitiivisten toimintojen s\u00e4ilymiseen vaikuttavat terveydentila ja fyysinen aktiivisuus. Tutkimuksissa on ollut viitteit\u00e4 siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 my\u00f6s kehonkoostumuksella olisi vaikutusta kognitiivisiin toimintoihin. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 ty\u00f6ss\u00e4 selvitettiin kest\u00e4vyyskunnon ja kehonkoostumuksen vaikutusta ty\u00f6muistia ja motorista nopeutta arvioivista neuropsykologisista testeist\u00e4 suoriutumiseen ik\u00e4\u00e4ntyneill\u00e4 naisilla.\n \nAineisto ker\u00e4ttiin Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4ss\u00e4 Neuro-Cognitive Changes in Aging-tutkimushankeessa. Tutkimukseen osallistui 44 63-80 vuotiasta naista. Kest\u00e4vyyskuntoa arvioitiin kuuden minuutin k\u00e4velytestill\u00e4. Kehonkoostumusta selvitettiin painoindeksill\u00e4 sek\u00e4 kehon rasvaprosentilla. Ty\u00f6muistia arvioitiin Digit Span sek\u00e4 Letter-Number Sequencing testeill\u00e4. Tahdonalaista motorista nopeutta testattiin Tapping testill\u00e4, jossa peukalon naputusnopeus rekister\u00f6itiin sek\u00e4 oikealta ett\u00e4 vasemmalta. Tutkimusryhm\u00e4 jaettiin kest\u00e4vyyskunnon ja kehonkoostumuksen mukaan kahteen ryhm\u00e4\u00e4n. K\u00e4velytestiss\u00e4 oman ik\u00e4ryhm\u00e4n viitearvon alle tai sen mukaisen tuloksen k\u00e4velleet muodostivat yhden ryhm\u00e4n ja yli oman viitearvon k\u00e4velleet toisen. Painoindeksi ja rasvaprosentti yhdistettiin summamuuttujaksi, jonka avulla ryhm\u00e4 jaettiin mediaanin mukaisesti kahteen ryhm\u00e4\u00e4n. Kest\u00e4vyyskunnon ja kehonkoostumuksen vaikutuksia ty\u00f6muistiin ja motoriseen nopeuteen tutkittiin korrelaatioin sek\u00e4 vertailemalla ryhmien v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 keskiarvoja normaaliudesta riippuen t-testill\u00e4, Mann-Whitneyn U-testill\u00e4 sek\u00e4 varianssianalyysill\u00e4.\n\nTutkittavat suoriutuivat kuuden minuutin k\u00e4velytestist\u00e4 keskim\u00e4\u00e4rin yli oman ik\u00e4ryhm\u00e4n viitearvojen (k\u00e4velymatka ka=614\u00b195 m). Kest\u00e4vyyskunnolla tai kehonkoostumuksella ei ollut vaikutusta ty\u00f6muistiin korrelaatioita tai ryhmien v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 keskiarvoja tarkasteltaessa. Aineistossa oli viitteit\u00e4 siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 kest\u00e4vyyskunto ja kehonkoostumus vaikuttavat ei-dominantin k\u00e4den motoriseen nopeuteen. Aerobisen kunnon ja vasemman k\u00e4den peukalon naputusnopeuden v\u00e4lill\u00e4 oli kohtalainen positiivinen korrelaatio (r=.346, p=.023). Lis\u00e4ksi t-testiss\u00e4 kest\u00e4vyyskunnoltaan eritasoisten ryhmien v\u00e4linen ero oli tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4 (p=.047). Toisessa ryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4 oli henkil\u00f6, jonka k\u00e4velytestitulos oli muuta ryhm\u00e4\u00e4 selv\u00e4sti heikompi. Changes occur in working memory, flexible intelligence and data processing. General health and physical activity affect cognition. Recent study results also indicate that body composition may affect cognitive functions. In this thesis the effects of aerobic fitness and body composition on neuropsychological tests that evaluate working memory and motor speed were assessed in older women. \n\nThe data is part of Neuro-Cognitive Changes in Aging research project executed in Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4. The study group consisted of 44 63-80-year-old women. Aerobic fitness was assessed with the six-minute walking test. Body composition was evaluated with body mass index and total fat percent. Working memory was tested with Digit Span and Letter-Number Sequencing tests. Motor speed was evaluated by Tapping test where the tapping speed of each thumb was registered. The study group was divided according to aerobic fitness and body composition. Persons whose walking test result was below or within the reference values of their own age group formed one group and those whose walking test result was above the reference value formed the other. Body mass index and fat percent were combined as a sum variable and the group was divided into two according to the median. The effects of aerobic fitness and body composition on working memory and motor speed were examined by correlations and by comparing the mean values of the groups according to normality with t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test and analysis of variance. \n\nIn the six-minute walking test the participants walked on average above their own age group\u2019s reference values (distance mean=614\u00b195 m). Aerobic fitness or body composition did not have an effect on working memory according to correlations and comparing the mean values of the groups. There were indications that aerobic fitness and body composition affect the motor speed of the non-dominant hand. There was a moderate positive correlation between aerobic fitness and the tapping speed of the left hand (r=.346, p=.023). The difference between the fitness groups was also statistically significant tested with t-test (p=.047). However, in one group there was a person whose walking test result was exceptionally slow (i.e. walked clearly below the reference value of her own age group). After removing this outlier from the analysis these results were non-significant. In the analysis of variance body composition significantly affected motor speed of the non-dominant hand (p=.05). \n\nIn this group of aerobically fit women aerobic fitness or body composition did not have an effect on working memory.
