Tuloksien pohjalta esitettiin, miten sairauspoissaoloja voidaan hallita. Tutkimus toteutettiin toimeksiantona Suomessa toimivalle elintarvikealan organisaatiolle. Tutkimuksen perusjoukkona olivat kolmen eri paikkakunnan tuotantoyksik\u00f6iden tuotantoty\u00f6ntekij\u00e4t ja toimihenkil\u00f6t. Tutkimusaineisto ker\u00e4ttiin m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llisesti kyselylomakkeilla ja laadullisesti haastatteluilla. Kyselyyn vastasi 316 vastaajaa, joista 87 oli tuotantoyksikk\u00f6 A:sta, 128 tuotantoyk-sikk\u00f6 B:st\u00e4 ja 101 tuotantoyksikk\u00f6 C:st\u00e4. Laadullinen aineisto, 18 haastattelua, ker\u00e4ttiin jokaisen tuotantoyksik\u00f6n nelj\u00e4lt\u00e4 tuotantoty\u00f6ntekij\u00e4lt\u00e4 ja kahdelta toimihenkil\u00f6lt\u00e4. Sairauspoissaolop\u00e4ivi\u00e4 oli yleisemmin naisilla kuin miehill\u00e4, tuotantoty\u00f6ntekij\u00f6ill\u00e4 kuin toimihenkil\u00f6ill\u00e4 ja vakituisilla kuin m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4aikaisilla ty\u00f6ntekij\u00f6ill\u00e4. Elintarvikety\u00f6ntekij\u00f6ill\u00e4 sairauspoissaoloja lis\u00e4siv\u00e4t itsearvioitu heikko oma nykyinen ty\u00f6kyky ja v\u00e4h\u00e4iset vaikutusmahdollisuudet ty\u00f6h\u00f6n. Kuitenkin yhdess\u00e4 tuotantoyksik\u00f6ss\u00e4 my\u00f6s hyv\u00e4t vaikutusmahdollisuudet ty\u00f6h\u00f6n lis\u00e4siv\u00e4t lyhyit\u00e4 sairauspoissaoloja. Luottava suhtautuminen ty\u00f6yhteis\u00f6n p\u00e4rj\u00e4\u00e4miseen ja t\u00f6iden etenemiseen oman poissaolon aikana sek\u00e4 ty\u00f6yhteis\u00f6n kannustava ilmapiiri madalsivat poissaolokynnyst\u00e4. Poissaolojen syiden ep\u00e4ily esimiehen ja ty\u00f6yhteis\u00f6n toimesta lis\u00e4siv\u00e4t poissaoloja, altistivat sairaana ty\u00f6h\u00f6n tulemiseen sek\u00e4 pidensiv\u00e4t sairauspoissaolojen kestoa. My\u00f6s yt-neuvotteluiden uhka koettiin ty\u00f6hyvinvointia heikent\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 ja sairauspoissaolok\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytymiseen vaikuttavana tekij\u00e4n\u00e4. Based on the results it was presented how sickness absences can be managed. This study was commissioned by a Finnish food industry company. The study participants consisted of blue and white collar workers working at three different production units in different locations. The data was collected by quantitative questionnaires and by qualitative interviews. The questionnaires were answered by 316 employees from which 87 were from production unit A, 128 from production unit B and 101 from production unit C. The qualitative data, altogether 18 interviews, was collected from four blue and two white collar workers from each production unit. Women had more sickness absence days compared to men, as well as blue collar workers compared to white collar workers and personnel with permanent contracts compared to fixed term contracts. Sickness absences increased among food industry employees when current self-assessed work ability was seen low and when possibilities to influence their work was seen weak. However, in one production unit employees' good possibilities to influence their work increased short-term sickness absences. The em-ployees' confidence on the work community\u00b4s capability to manage and proceed with work tasks during sickness absences and supportive working atmosphere lowered the sickness absence threshold. Supervisors' and work communities' doubts on the reasons of sickness absence increased sickness absences, added pressure to work while ill and prolonged the length of sickness absences. The threat of lay-off negotiations was seen as a factor that decreased occupational wellbeing and had an impact on sickness absence behavior. Managing sickness absences is based on individualism, collectivism, contents of work and the work environment which demands skills and resources from supervisors.
