Tutkimuskysymykseksi muodostui, millaisia merkityksi\u00e4 lapset antavat lukukoiratoiminnalle. Lis\u00e4ksi tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, onko lukukoiratoiminta tavoitteellista ja tarkoituksenmukaista.\n\nTeoreettisena viitekehyksen\u00e4 k\u00e4ytettiin kansainv\u00e4lisi\u00e4 lukukoiratoimintaa koskevia tutkimuksia. Lis\u00e4ksi kartoitettiin lukukoiratoiminnan asemaa Suomessa. T\u00e4m\u00e4n laadullisen tapaustutkimuksen aineistona oli kuuden lapsen haastattelut. Kaikilla tutkittavilla lapsilla oli erityisen tuen p\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6s. Sen ohella haastateltiin heid\u00e4n opettajaansa ja havainnoitiin lukukoiratuokiota. Haastattelut analysoitiin fenomenografisesti. \n\nLukukoiratoiminnalle annetut merkitykset olivat p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa my\u00f6nteisi\u00e4. Lukukoiratoiminnalla voi olla lapsille esimerkiksi motivoiva, lukemista helpottava, my\u00f6nteisi\u00e4 tunteita her\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4 ja sosiaalisia paineita poistava merkitys. Toisaalta he voivat kokea sen merkityksett\u00f6m\u00e4ksi. Havainnoidun lukukoiratuokion perusteella voidaan todeta, ett\u00e4 tuokio pit\u00e4isi rakentaa vastaamaan tarkemmin asetettuja tavoitteita. T\u00e4m\u00e4 saattoi osaltaan vaikuttaa lasten merkityksenantoihin. \n\nLukukoiratoiminta voi olla lapsille merkityksellist\u00e4 lukemisen harjoittelua, mink\u00e4 vuoksi toiminnalla on mahdollisesti pedagoginen arvo. Lukukoira saattaisi sopia erityisen hyvin oppilaille, joilla on ongelmia lukemisessa tai motivaation puutetta. Lukukoiratoiminnalla voi olla lapsille my\u00f6nteisi\u00e4 merkityksi\u00e4, vaikka toiminta ei olisi aivan tarkoituksenmukaisesti j\u00e4rjestetty.
