Lis\u00e4ksi suurin osa olemassa olevasta, oppimiseen liittyv\u00e4st\u00e4 tutkimuksesta keskittyy teoriaan k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n ilmi\u00f6iden tutkimisen sijaan. Varsinkin kielten oppimista k\u00e4sittelev\u00e4 tutkimus on viel\u00e4 puutteellista. Videopelit mediana ovat kehittyneet paljon erityisesti 2000-luvulla ja niiden mahdollisuudet opetuksessa yleisesti tulisi kuitenkin selvitt\u00e4\u00e4.\r\n T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkielman l\u00e4ht\u00f6kohtana on tutkia yl\u00e4kouluoppilaiden videopelaamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n vaikutusta heid\u00e4n englannin kielen taitoonsa, sek\u00e4 eroja eri videopelityyppien pelaajien englannin taidossa. Tutkielmassa kielitaidon merkkin\u00e4 k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n englannin kielen kouluarvosanaa. Tutkimuksen aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin kyselytutkimuksella, joka teetettiin kahdelle yl\u00e4koululuokalle kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 2014. Tutkielmaan osallistuneet ryhm\u00e4t olivat yl\u00e4koulun 8. ja 9. luokalla ja he olivat opiskelleet englantia 6-7 vuoden ajan. Kyselyyn vastasi yhteens\u00e4 31 henkil\u00f6\u00e4. Tutkimuskysymykset koskivat oppilaiden harrastustottumuksia, erityisesti heid\u00e4n videopelitottumuksiaan.\r\n Kyselyn pienest\u00e4 otannasta johtuen tutkimuksen tulokset eiv\u00e4t ole tilastollisesti merkitsevi\u00e4. T\u00e4st\u00e4 huolimatta tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 yl\u00e4kouluoppilaiden kielen keskiarvosanan ja videopelaamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n v\u00e4lill\u00e4 n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 olevan positiivinen korrelaatio. Oppilailla jotka pelasivat ryhm\u00e4n keskiarvoa enemm\u00e4n videopelej\u00e4 oli my\u00f6s keskiarvoa korkeampi englannin arvosana, kun taas keskiarvoa v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n pelaavilla oppilailla oli keskiarvoa alhaisemmat arvosanat. Lis\u00e4ksi eri videopelityyppien pelaajien v\u00e4lill\u00e4 havaittiin eroja heid\u00e4n englannin kielen arvosanassaan. Ainoastaan massiivimoninpelien ja roolipelien pelaajien arvosana oli kaikkien vastaajien keskiarvoa korkeampi.\r\n Vaikka tuloksia ei voidakaan yleist\u00e4\u00e4 koskemaan kaikkia oppilaita, kannustavat tulokset lis\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n videopelien ja pelillisten elementtien hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4mist\u00e4 osana kielten opetusta. Nyky\u00e4\u00e4n oppilaita kehotetaan k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n muun muassa elokuvia ja TV-sarjoja, kirjoja ja muuta mediaa kielitaitojensa kehitt\u00e4miseksi.
