T\u00e4m\u00e4 asettaa haasteita englannin opetukselle ja opettajien onkin mietitt\u00e4v\u00e4, miten opetusta voisi kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 nykyajan vaatimuksia ja tarpeita vastaavaksi. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 kehitt\u00e4misty\u00f6ss\u00e4 on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 ottaa my\u00f6s oppilaat ja heid\u00e4n mielipiteens\u00e4 huomioon. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 millaista englannin opetus nyky\u00e4\u00e4n on suomalaisissa lukioissa. Erityisesti tutkimus pyrkii saamaan selville, k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4nk\u00f6 tunneilla enemm\u00e4n perinteisi\u00e4 vai innovatiivisia opetusmenetelmi\u00e4. Perinteisill\u00e4 opetusmenetelmill\u00e4 tarkoitetaan tutkimuksessa opettajakeskeisi\u00e4, kirjalliseen tuottamiseen ja kielioppiin keskittyvi\u00e4 tapoja kun taas innovatiivisilla opetusmenetelmill\u00e4 tarkoitetaan oppilaskeskeisi\u00e4, kielen kaikkiin nelj\u00e4\u00e4n eri osa-alueeseen tasapuolisesti keskittyvi\u00e4 tapoja opettaa. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on my\u00f6s selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 oppilaiden ja opettajien mielipiteit\u00e4 erilaisista perinteisist\u00e4 ja innovatiivisista opetusmenetelmist\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi tutkimus pyrkii saamaan selville millaiset tavat opettaa ovat oppilaiden ja opettajien mielest\u00e4 kaikkein tehokkaimpia. Tarkoituksena on my\u00f6s verrata oppilaiden ja opettajien vastauksia kaikkiin edelt\u00e4viin kolmeen kysymykseen ja etsi\u00e4 eroja ja yht\u00e4l\u00e4isyyksi\u00e4 heid\u00e4n vastauksistaan. Tutkimukseen osallistui 96 lukiolaista ja 84 lukion englannin kielen opettajaa. Tutkimuksen aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin\r\nkyselylomakkeella maalis-huhtikuussa 2013. Kyselylomake sis\u00e4lsi Likert asteikkoon pohjautuvia kysymyksi\u00e4, jotka analysoitiin m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llisesti. Lis\u00e4ksi kyselyss\u00e4 oli yksi avoin kysymys, joka analysoitiin laadullisesti. Tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 innovatiivisia opetusmenetelmi\u00e4 k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n suomalaisissa lukioissa englannin tunneilla enemm\u00e4n kuin perinteisi\u00e4. Tunneilla keskustellaan paljon englanniksi ja keskityt\u00e4\u00e4n enemm\u00e4n viestin\r\nymm\u00e4rt\u00e4miseen kuin virheiden korjaamiseen. Ryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4 tai pareittain ty\u00f6skentely on yleist\u00e4 ja opettajat k\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4t enemm\u00e4n englantia kuin suomea ja rohkaisevat my\u00f6s oppilaita puhumaan englanniksi. T\u00e4st\u00e4 huolimatta tunneilla k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s paljon perinteisi\u00e4 tapoja opettaa, sill\u00e4 kirjallisilla kokeilla on edelleen suurin merkitys arvioinnissa. Tulosten mukaan oppilaat ja opettajat kokevat erilaiset innovatiiviset oppilaskeskeiset opetusmenetelm\u00e4t\r\nmielekk\u00e4\u00e4mmiksi kuin perinteiset tavat opettaa. Hy\u00f6dyllisimpin\u00e4 englannin oppimisessa pidettiin erilaisia\r\nkeskusteluharjoituksia ja yhteistoiminnallisuutta. Lis\u00e4ksi vaihtelevuus ja monipuolisuus koettiin t\u00e4rke\u00e4n\u00e4. Oppilaiden mielest\u00e4 perinteisi\u00e4 tapoja opettaa k\u00e4ytettiin tunneilla enemm\u00e4n kuin opettajien mielest\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi oppilailla oli opettajia positiivisempi asenne perinteisi\u00e4 opetusmenetelmi\u00e4 kohtaan.
