T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli tarkastella kielenoppijoiden n\u00e4kemyksi\u00e4 siit\u00e4, miten englannin kielen opetus suomalaisessa peruskoulussa valmistaa oppijoita k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n kielt\u00e4 autenttisissa kielenk\u00e4ytt\u00f6tilanteissa peruskoulun j\u00e4lkeen. Tarkoituksena oli my\u00f6s selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, mitk\u00e4 opetuksen osa-alueet lis\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t oppijoiden kyky\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 kielt\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi tutkimus pyrki selvitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n, millaisia kielenk\u00e4ytt\u00f6tilanteita oppijat ovat kokeneet. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli my\u00f6s tarkastella kielenoppijoiden n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmia siit\u00e4, miten englannin kielen opetus vastaa sille asetettuihin tavoitteisiin ja haasteisiin k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n opetuksessa.\r\n\r\nTutkielman aineisto koostuu nelj\u00e4st\u00e4 puoli-strukturoidusta ryhm\u00e4haastattelusta, joihin osallistui 12 yhdeks\u00e4sluokkalaista englannin kielen opiskelijaa kahdesta eri peruskoulusta. Haastatteluissa oppilaita kehoitettiin tuomaan vapaasti esiin ajatuksiaan ja mielipiteit\u00e4\u00e4n tutkitusta aiheesta. Tutkimusaineisto analysoitiin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6ist\u00e4 sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysia.\r\n\r\nTutkimuksessa selvisi, ett\u00e4 oppilaat ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4v\u00e4t englannin kielen viestint\u00e4taitojen t\u00e4rkeyden kaikessa toiminnassa nykyajan globaalissa maailmassa. Lis\u00e4ksi oppilaat suhtautuvat my\u00f6nteisesti englannin kielen viestint\u00e4taitojen opettamiseen ja oppimiseen. Kaikenkaikkiaan oppilaat kokivat, ett\u00e4 englannin kielen opetus peruskoulussa antaa valmiuksia k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 kielt\u00e4 autenttisissa kielenk\u00e4ytt\u00f6tilanteissa. Tutkimuksen tulokset kuitenkin osoittivat useita seikkoja, jotka ilmaisivat, ettei kielenk\u00e4yt\u00f6n ja kommunikatiivisuuden kehityst\u00e4 tueta englannin kielen opetuksessa asetetuista tavoitteista huolimatta.\r\n\r\nTutkielman tulokset osoittivat, ett\u00e4 englannin kielen viestint\u00e4taitojen opettamiseen ja oppimiseen tulisi kiinnitt\u00e4\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n huomiota perusopetuksen aikana.
