Se toimii my\u00f6s yh\u00e4 eneneviss\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4rin maailmanlaajuisena lingua francana ei-\u00e4idinkielisten englannin kielen puhujien v\u00e4lisess\u00e4 kommunikaatiossa. Englannin kielen roolin muuttumisen my\u00f6t\u00e4, my\u00f6s englannin kielen opetukseen on vaadittu muutoksia. On ehdotettu, ett\u00e4 nykyisen englannin standardi varieteetteja, mm. amerikanenglanti ja brittienglanti, painottavan mallin sijaan, englannin opetuksen tulisi mukailla enemm\u00e4n lingua franca -englanti (ELF) mallia. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 lukiolaisten asenteita ELF:i\u00e4 ja sen opettamista kohtaan. Asenteita ELF:i\u00e4 kohtaan tutkittiin kolmesta n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta: oppilaiden omat tavoitteet englannin kielen opiskelussa, oppilaiden asennoituminen englannin eri varieteetteihin, sek\u00e4 heid\u00e4n suhtautumisensa tyypillisiin kielellisiin ELF rakenteisiin. ELF:n opetuksen osalta, tavoitteena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 olisivatko oppilaat halukkaita sis\u00e4llytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n opetukseen ELF-mallin mukaisia oppisis\u00e4lt\u00f6j\u00e4. Tutkimus toteutettiin kyselytutkimuksella, joka sis\u00e4lsi erilaisten v\u00e4itt\u00e4mien ja suorien kysymysten lis\u00e4ksi my\u00f6s avoimia kysymyksi\u00e4. Tulokset analysoitiin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 sek\u00e4 tilastollista analyysi\u00e4 ett\u00e4 sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysi\u00e4. Kyselyyn vastasi yhteens\u00e4 90 opiskelijaa kolmesta eri lukiosta. Tutkimuksesta ilmeni, ett\u00e4 suuri osa oppilaista yh\u00e4 suosii ja tavoittelee syntyper\u00e4isen englannin puhujan kompetenssia. T\u00e4st\u00e4 huolimatta oppilaat ovat kiinnostuneita my\u00f6s muista kulttuureista ja englannin varieteeteista ja tiedostavat niiden t\u00e4rkeyden. Oppilaat my\u00f6s kaipasivat opetukseen enemm\u00e4n vaihtelua ja olivat halukkaita sis\u00e4llytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n kulttuurinopetukseen tietoa maista, joiden p\u00e4\u00e4kieli ei ole englanti. Oppilaiden suhtautuminen kielen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n ja rakenteisiin on kaksijakoinen sill\u00e4 toisaalta oppilaat korostavat kommunikaatiota ja heid\u00e4n mielest\u00e4\u00e4n t\u00e4rkeint\u00e4 on, ett\u00e4 keskustelussa osapuolet ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4v\u00e4t toisiaan virheist\u00e4 huolimatta. He my\u00f6s n\u00e4kiv\u00e4t erilaisten kommunikaatiostrategioiden lis\u00e4\u00e4misen opetukseen hy\u00f6dyllisen\u00e4. Samaan aikaan oppilaat kuitenkin paheksuivat kielioppivirheit\u00e4 ja kieliopillisesti virheellisi\u00e4 ja ELF-rakenteita sis\u00e4lt\u00e4vi\u00e4 lauseita pidettiin huonona englantina. Kaiken kaikkiaan, tutkimuksesta k\u00e4vi ilmi, ett\u00e4 oppilaat ovat yh\u00e4 kiintyneit\u00e4 englannin standardi varieteetteihin ja erityisesti kielellisesti ELF koetaan alempiarvoisena.
