Samalla pelaamisen tutkimus on lis\u00e4\u00e4ntynyt ja videopelit on havaittu hy\u00f6dyllisiksi.\r\nToisaalta globaalisaatio ja teknologian kehitys on johtanut siihen, ett\u00e4 englanti on tullut osaksi arkea entist\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n. Videopelit tarjoavat hauskan ja laajan oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n, mutta videopelien vaikutuksia kielenoppimiseen ei kuitenkaan ole tutkittu viel\u00e4 kovinkaan paljoa. Etenkin tytt\u00f6jen pelaamisen tutkiminen on viel\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4ist\u00e4, koska perinteisesti ajatellaan, ett\u00e4 vain pojat pelaavat. Lis\u00e4ksi on huomattu, ett\u00e4 ne pojat, jotka pelaavat videopelej\u00e4, menestyv\u00e4t englannissa paremmin kuin tyt\u00f6t.\r\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 oppivatko tyt\u00f6t englantia videopelej\u00e4 pelaamalla ja ker\u00e4t\u00e4 my\u00f6s tietoa heid\u00e4n pelimieltymyksist\u00e4\u00e4n. Aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin kyselylomakkeena Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopistossa ja siihen osallistui yhteens\u00e4 133 naispuolista opiskelijaa. Kysymykset liittyiv\u00e4t tytt\u00f6jen kokemuksiin ja mielikuviin.\r\nTuloksista k\u00e4vi ilmi, ett\u00e4 suurin osa vastaajista koki videopelien vaikuttaneen englannin kielen taitoonsa positiivisella tavalla. Vaikutukset ylsiv\u00e4t monille eri kielitaidon alueille ja etenkin sanaston koettiin parantuneen. Yleisimpi\u00e4 syit\u00e4 olivat, ett\u00e4 pelit ovat englanniksi ja ett\u00e4 niiss\u00e4 ei p\u00e4\u00e4se eteen p\u00e4in, jos ei ymm\u00e4rr\u00e4 englantia. Vastaajat saattoivat istua sanakirja k\u00e4dess\u00e4 pelatessaan tai yrittiv\u00e4t muuten selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, mit\u00e4 peliss\u00e4 puhuttiin. T\u00e4ll\u00f6in voidaan olettaa, ett\u00e4 pelit ovat motivoivia ja hy\u00f6dyllisi\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi voidaan ajatella, ett\u00e4 peleist\u00e4 voisi olla hy\u00f6ty\u00e4 kouluopetuksessa niiden moninaisuuden takia. Ne sopivat hyvin erilaisille oppijoille ja tarjoavat jotain mielenkiintoista melkein jokaiselle.
