Lis\u00e4ksi tutkittiin, onko kiinnittymisen tai sosiaalisen kompetenssin ulottuvuuksilla yhteytt\u00e4 oppilaan koulumenestykseen. Yhteyksien eroja tarkasteltiin tutkimuksen taustamuuttujien v\u00e4lill\u00e4, jotka olivat sukupuoli, luokka-aste ja erityisopetustausta. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli saada lis\u00e4\u00e4 tietoa alakouluik\u00e4isten kouluun kiinnittymisest\u00e4 ja sosiaalisesta kompetenssista sek\u00e4 niiden vaikutuksista oppilaiden koulumenestykseen. \r\nTutkimus oli osa laajempaa Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston erityispedagogiikan oppiaineen kouluun kiinnittymisen tutkimuksen hanketta. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin kouluun kiinnittymismittarin (OKI) soveltuvuutta alakouluik\u00e4isten oppilaiden kohdalla. Tutkimusaineisto ker\u00e4ttiin paperilomakkeilla toukokuussa 2012 ja se koostui 350:sta alakoulun 5. ja 6. luokkalaisista oppilaasta, joista 172 oli tytt\u00f6j\u00e4 ja 178 poikia. Oppilaista 62 sai erityist\u00e4 tukea. Tutkittavien v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 yhteyksi\u00e4 ja eroja tutkittiin regressioanalyysill\u00e4 taustamuuttujittain.\r\nTutkimuksen mittarit soveltuivat hyvin tarkoitukseensa. Sosiaalinen kompetenssi oli positiivisesti yhteydess\u00e4 sek\u00e4 kognitiiviseen ett\u00e4 emotionaaliseen kouluun kiinnittymiseen kaikkien taustamuuttujien osalta. Sukupuolten v\u00e4lill\u00e4 ei havaittu merkitsevi\u00e4 eroja, kun taas luokka-asteiden v\u00e4lill\u00e4 oli eroja niin kouluun kiinnittymisen kuin sosiaalisen kompetenssin yhteydess\u00e4 koulumenestykseen. Viidesluokkalaisilla molemmat kouluun kiinnittymisen ulottuvuudet sek\u00e4 yhteisty\u00f6taidot selittiv\u00e4t koulumenestyst\u00e4, kun taas kuudesluokkalaisilla kouluun kiinnittyminen ei vaikuttanut koulumenestykseen, mutta yhteisty\u00f6taidot vaikuttivat positiivisesti ja empatia negatiivisesti heid\u00e4n koulumenestykseens\u00e4. Erityisoppilaiden kouluun kiinnittyminen ei vaikuttanut heid\u00e4n koulumenestykseens\u00e4, kun taas yleisopetuksen oppilailla kognitiivinen kiinnittyminen vaikutti koulumenestykseen. Additionally it was studied, if the self-reported school engagement and social competence dimensions affected the school performance. The differences between these relationships were examined by comparing them divided to the background variables of the study, which were gender, class level and the history of participating in special education. The objective of this study was to find out more about the school engagement and social competence of middle-school-aged students, and their effects to students' school performance.\r\nThe study was a part of broader school engagement project of University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4's special education program. This study examined the suitability of Student Engagement Instrument (SEI) on middle school students. The research data was collected by paper surveys conducted in May 2012 consisting of 350 fifth or sixth grade middle school students. 172 of the students were female and 178 male. 62 of the students participated in special education. The relationships and differences between them were studied with regression analysis divided by the background variables.\r\nThe instruments and metrics applied well on this data. Social competence was positively connected with both the cognitive and emotional school engagement on all the background variables. No significant differences were examined between the genders. Between the class levels, there were differences in how both the school engagement and social competence affected school performance. The both dimensions of school engagement and co-operation skills explained the school performance on fifth graders, when on sixth graders school engagement did not affect school performance, but co-operation skills affected positively and empathy negatively their school performance. Co-operation skills accounted for the school performance of mainstream education students, and impulsivity for the performance of special education students.\r\nThe results need to be confirmed by repeating the use of the instruments, and further studies on the data consisting of middle school students, but the results offered important view on the relationships and differences between social competence and school engagement.
