Mines often lower the water quality of their surrounding waters and this may lead to salinization and eutrophication for instance. Salinization may be due to dissolved ions in the wastewater, like sulphate and sodium, and may cause the artificial stratification of a lake. Sulphate can also prevent the natural circulation of iron in the sediments, which favors the release of phosphorus and could lead to eutrophication. All impacts cannot be assessed in advance and not enough studies have been made concerning these substances. The Talvivaara mine in Sotkamo is an example of a new technology, bioleaching, where nickel is being extracted of the ore with the help of microbes. The discharges of e.g. sulphate, sodium and manganese to nearby waters have been larger than expected, which has caused challenges to the water balance and the wastewater management. The aim of this study was to examine the changes in the concentrations of these substances from the measurements carried out by the consultant company from 2007, before the mine, until September 2012, to compare these concentrations to other Finnish lakes and to study the impacts on waters from the point of view of salinization and eutrophication. To analyze the possibility of eutrophication the concentration of phosphorus in the deeper water layers was compared to the concentrations of sulphate, oxygen and iron. In small-scale field studies two lakes were studied by water and sediment samples. In this study it was clear that still in 2012 the concentrations of sulphate, sodium and manganese especially in the deepest water layers were higher and differed from other Finnish lakes. Salinization and oxygen depletion were seen clearly in the closest lakes to the mine at latest during the year 2012, when also the concentrations of Fe and P rose. Layers of sulphides in the sediment samples and the rising P-concentration could indicate sulphate-mediated eutrophication, however, the Fe/P-ratio was still sufficient to keep the phosphorus in the sediment. Kuormitus l\u00e4hivesist\u00f6ihin on ollut esimerkiksi sulfaatin, natriumin ja mangaanin osalta arvioitua suurempaa, mik\u00e4 on tuonut haasteita muun muassa purkuvesien ja vesitaseen hoitamiseen. T\u00e4m\u00e4n ty\u00f6n tavoitteena oli tutkia sulfaatin, natriumin ja mangaanin pitoisuusmuutoksia konsulttiyhti\u00f6n tekemien vesist\u00f6tarkkailujen pohjalta vuodesta 2007, eli ajalta ennen kaivostoimintaa, vuoden 2012 syyskuulle asti, verrata pitoisuuksia Suomen muihin vesist\u00f6ihin ja tutkia vaikutuksia vesist\u00f6ihin suolaantumisen ja rehev\u00f6itymisen kannalta. Mahdollisen rehev\u00f6itymisen tutkimiseksi analysoitiin kokonaisfosforin pitoisuuksia suhteessa sulfaatti-, happi- ja rautapitoisuuksiin. Pieness\u00e4 maasto-osuudessa tutkittiin kahta alueen j\u00e4rve\u00e4 vesimittauksin ja sedimenttin\u00e4yttein. Tutkimuksissa ilmeni, ett\u00e4 yh\u00e4 vuonna 2012 sulfaatin, natriumin ja mangaanin pitoisuudet varsinkin alusvesiss\u00e4 olivat koholla ja erosivat Suomen muista vesist\u00f6ist\u00e4. Suolaantuminen l\u00e4himpien j\u00e4rvien alusvesiss\u00e4 oli selv\u00e4\u00e4. Happi kului tutkituista l\u00e4hij\u00e4rvist\u00e4 viimeist\u00e4\u00e4n vuoden 2012 aikana loppuun, jolloin my\u00f6s rauta- ja kokonaisfosforipitoisuudet l\u00e4htiv\u00e4t nousuun. Sedimenttin\u00e4ytteiden sulfidikerros sek\u00e4 fosforipitoisuuden nousu viittasivat sulfaatin kiihdytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n rehev\u00f6itymiseen. Toisaalta laskettu raudan ja fosforin moolisuhde kuvasi rautaa olevan viel\u00e4 riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti fosforin pit\u00e4miseen sedimentiss\u00e4.
