Teknologian lisääntyminen niin työaikana kuin vapaa-ajalla on lisännyt istumiseen käytettävää aikaa. Istumisajan lisääntyessä fyysinen aktiivisuus vähenee, mikä johtaa aineenvaihdunnan häiriöihin, jotka ovat mahdollisesti osana kardiometabolisten sairauksien kehittymisessä. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää liikkumattomuuden yhteyttä sydän- ja verisuonitautiriskiin ja tyypin 2 diabetekseen suomalaisessa työikäisessä väestössä. Aineisto saatiin Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitokselta, jonka FIN-D2D poikkileikkaustutkimus toteutettiin syksyllä 2007. Istumisaikaa ja kardiometabolisia riskitekijöitä kyseltiin 4500 tutkittavalta, jotka olivat iältään 45–74- vuotiaita. Yli 65-vuotiaat sekä tutkittavat, joilla oli puuttuvia tietoja, suljettiin tutkimuksesta pois. Lopullinen otoskoko oli 1843 tutkittavaa, joista 845 oli miehiä ja 998 naisia. Framinghamin 10 vuoden riskiprofiilia käytettiin kuvaamaan tutkimuksessa sydän- ja verisuonitautiriskiä. Tulosten perusteella Framinghamin riskiprofiili ja tyypin 2 diabeteksen yleisyys kasvoivat istumistuntien mukaan. Vakiointi iällä, sukupuolella ja koulutusvuosilla ei poistanut yhteyttä. TV:n katselu oli yhteydessä Framinghamin riskiprofiiliin miehillä ja naisilla (p<0.05), mutta kokonaisistumisajalla ei havaittu olevan yhteyttä tulosmuuttujiin vakioinnista huolimatta. Istumisaika saattaa olla tärkeä tekijä sydän- ja verisuonisairauksien ja tyypin 2 diabeteksen ehkäisyssä. Liikkumattomuuden tiedetään olevan terveyden kannalta haitallista, mutta syy-seuraussuhteiden selvittämiseksi tarvitaan lisää interventio- ja pitkittäistutkimuksia. Istumisen määrälle ei ole tutkimuksien perusteella vielä tarkkaa riskirajaa. Liikkumattomuuden määrästä kaivataan lisää objektiivisesti mitattuja tutkimuksia. However, recent evidence on sedentary behavior suggests that differences in the time spent sitting instead of physical activity may explain the health associations related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes. Advances in society, workplace and home technologies, have created an environment that promotes sedentary behaviors. Modern technological advances that remove active movement initiate metabolic dysfunctions that are probable in developing cardiometabolic diseases. The purpose of this study is to examine sedentary time in relation to CVD risk and type 2 diabetes in Finnish working aged population. The data were received from The National Institute for Health and Welfare, from the FIN-D2D cross-sectional survey carried out in 2007. Sedentary time and cardiometabolic risk factors were inquired of 4500 people aged 45–74 years. Subjects over 65 years or with missing data on study variables were excluded from the final analyses, thus, the final statistical analyses included 1843 persons (845 men and 998 women). Framingham 10 year CVD risk score was used to represent CVD risk. Analyses revealed that both the Framingham CVD score and type 2 diabetes were detrimentally associated with television viewing time in men and women (both p < 0.05), independent of physical activity. After adjusting for age, educational level and physical activity, the association remained statistically significant. However, with overall daily sedentary time the trend was negative for both genders, and did not attenuate significance in adjusted models. The findings suggest that sedentary time may have a significant role in CVD and type 2 diabetes prevention in Finnish population. There is an urgent need of longitudinal and intervention studies in order to determine the causal relationships between sedentary behavior and cardiometabolic health for sedentary guidelines.
