Kuinka kehyksen museoarvo muodostuu? Kuinka kehyksen museoarvon tunnustaminen vaikuttaa sen k\u00e4sittelyyn kokoelmahallinnan yhteydess\u00e4? Menetelm\u00e4t perustuvat niin m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4lliseen kuin laadulliseen tutkimukseen. Aineistona on kehyksist\u00e4 kirjoitettu kirjallisuus sek\u00e4 kyselytutkimuksella tuotettu aineisto. Kirjallisuus painottuu ulkomaisiin teksteihin ja toimii niin analyysin apuna kuin kohteena. Kyselytutkimus teetettiin kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 2012 ja kohderyhm\u00e4n\u00e4 oli harkinnanvarainen n\u00e4yte kotimaisia ammatillisesti hoidettuja museoita. Kyselyll\u00e4 tuotettu aineisto antaa tietoa 73 vastanneen museon kehysten luettelointi- ja dokumentointik\u00e4yt\u00e4nteist\u00e4, k\u00e4sittelyst\u00e4, k\u00e4yt\u00f6st\u00e4 ja arvoista sek\u00e4 n\u00e4iden muuttumisesta ajan my\u00f6t\u00e4. Aineistojen analyysi pohjautuu museologian teoriaan, jonka tarkastelukohteena tutkielmassa ovat objekti kulttuuriperinn\u00f6n osana sek\u00e4 toiminnot, jotka t\u00e4ht\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t kulttuuriperinn\u00f6n suojeluun ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n.\r\n\r\nTutkimusraportissa kuvataan taulunkehysten monitahoisuutta ja liittym\u00e4kohtia monenlaisiin kulttuurin ilmi\u00f6ihin k\u00e4sity\u00f6perinteest\u00e4 kuvataiteeseen. Kehyksell\u00e4 todetaan voivan olla museaalista arvoa ja siten pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n m\u00e4\u00e4rittelem\u00e4\u00e4n, miten museoarvo rakentuu. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 museoarvon rakentumiseen vaikuttavat kehyksen esineelliset ominaispiirteet ja yksil\u00f6lliset kontekstitiedot, alkuper\u00e4isyys, yhteys kehystett\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4n teokseen tai muuhun objektiin sek\u00e4 museon kokoelmahallinnan tekij\u00e4t. The objective of the thesis is to study picture frames as material objects and as generators of meaning from the viewpoints of museology and material culture studies, and to study the identification, management, and the assignment of value to frames in the museal frame of reference, and to assess the factors affecting these processes.\r\n\r\nThe main research questions are: Can a frame have museal value? How is the museal value of a frame formed? How does the recognition of museal value of a frame affect its status within collections management? The research methods are both quantitative and qualitative. The research data comprises literature related to picture frames and data generated by a survey. The literature discusses frames mostly outside Finland, and is utilized both as the object of and an aid to the analysis of data. The survey was conducted in the spring of 2012, and the target group comprised of professional museums in Finland. The data generated by the survey is informative of cataloguing and documentation practices, management, use, and values of frames, as well as possible changes in these matters in the 73 museums that gave their response. The research data is analysed in the context of museological theory, especially within the parameters relating to the cultural heritage object and the functions concerning the preservation and use of cultural heritage.\r\n\r\nThe research report describes picture frames as multifaceted objects that have a connection to various aspects of culture from the history of craftsmanship to fine art. A frame can indeed have museal value, and so the study focuses on determining how the museal value is generated. The results show that factors like the material characteristics and individual context of a frame; the connection of a frame to the framed object; a frame being original; and the features of a particular collection affect the formation of museal value. In addition, it is affected by the divide of frames to primary museums objects and utility articles in museums, as well as the question of separately valued frames and frames connected to artworks. The ways picture frames are identified, managed, and valued are significantly different in cultural history museums and art museums.
